Hooray for the cavalry! The great fire of ’07, part IV.

It wasn’t exactly the cavalry. Trucks from four different fire departments, the Sheriff’s Department, a fire marshal and maybe a reservist or two with armored cavalry connections arrived within seconds of each other. The important thing is that they arrived in the nick of time to save the day.... Sign in to see full entry.

Thanks, Guys and Gals

I appreciate all the warm welcome backs. Your response warms my innards. Unfortunately, I'm seriously freezing my ass off. I'd like to stick around and visit a little longer. But I've got a newspaper deadline to make in the morning, and I'm just too cold to keep going tonight. The old fingers are so... Sign in to see full entry.

A little help, please.

I’m looking for a new ISP. That’s Internet Service Provider for those of you who are no more computer literate than good ol’ notapoet. I just like to show off what little technical jargon I know to partially balance off an extreme case of computer illiteracy. Like many people, I started off with... Sign in to see full entry.

Fire, fire, burning so bright; the great fire of ‘07, part III

My son’s father-in-law had succeeded in dousing much of the flaming grass between the back of my sweatbox and my son’s old pickup until he lost water pressure when I disconnected the hose. It was enough for me to hotfoot it over the scorched earth and the leading edge of the grass fire to get at the... Sign in to see full entry.

The Great Fire of ‘07, Part 2

The hose, though long, didn’t reach far enough. I was almost ten feet shy of the front right corner of the sweatbox. The flames, in the brief time it took to bang on my son’s door and grab and drag his hose as far as I could, had spread to the back of ol’ home, sweet home. A really ugly shrub was... This week in notapoet land is bound to be better than last week.

Last week it was all I could do to get up and move around a little. My annual summer cold, you know -- the one I thought I‘d finally avoided -- hit with a vengeance just in time to be classified as a summer cold. And that was only the worst of last week. Say, what? Well, if you’re a devoted notapoet... Sign in to see full entry.

What goes around comes around

…and Heaven help me for thinking it, but I’m only human. About 15 months ago I was out of work with a broken down car, on food stamps, ineligible for unemployment, and not making enough money on casual day work and freelancing to cover my rent and utilities. My son, good boy that he is, was helping... Sign in to see full entry.

It was a blogging good weekend!

I know, I know. There were several announced departures of prominent bloggers -- three of whom I bid a sad farewell because I’m convinced they are serious and I’m truly going to miss them. And then there was the constant buzzing about plagiarism and negativity, which for the most part I... Sign in to see full entry.

Somebody won my $314 million.

I know, it really wasn’t mine. But I did buy a Powerball ticket. I usually buy one ticket for a drawing when I have an available dollar and I happen to be somewhere they sell lottery tickets. I forget how many umptillion to one the odds are against any one ticket winning the jackpot. I know enough... Sign in to see full entry.

Another scorcher in the Carolinas

We’ve had so many 100-degree plus days lately that I’ve lost track. Most of the days we didn’t make it into the hundreds have been in the high nineties and seemed just as miserable. If it looks like its going to be this hot next summer I think I’ll pack up and head to my boyhood stomping grounds in... Sign in to see full entry.

Kamikaze Blogging, Part 2

Yup, another day of dive bombing in and out of the neighborhood because I can’t stay online for large blocks of time. I had to keep the phone line free earlier so I could gather info today and set up additional info input for tonight and early tomorrow morning. With a little bit of luck that should... Kamikaze Blogging

Nope, it doesn’t really fit because the implied meaning is suicidal, and I plan on surviving as a blogger beyond today. But I couldn’t resist the image of a dive bombing blogger that “Kamikaze” created in my mind. Dive bombing in and out of Blogit is how I’ll have to function from now till a little... Just thinking out loud here

I’m not the first, and I certainly won’t be the last, to notice that those who post to a blog several times a day, or who space posts to several different blogs throughout the day, seem to be more successful at this game than the rest of us. There are exceptions, but it seems to hold true for all... Sign in to see full entry.

If It Wasn’t For Bad Luck

…is the title of an old song (1969) by Ray Charles & Jimmy Lewis. I’ve used it as a lead before. But it fits present circumstances, too. I could be covering a soccer match right now if I had any transportation. My wheels have been down for a while and I’ve been relying on my good friend Dan for... Sign in to see full entry.

Oops!

My second computer crash of the day seemed like a good time to take a brief break. Next thing I know it’s about eight hours later and I’m trying to remember just what it was that I planned to do next. I suppose it’ll come back to me sooner or later. Probably about the time I crash again, or my... Sign in to see full entry.

The laptop crashed five times.

When it was up and running, half the time it was as slow as cold molasses. I only got to do about half the reading and posting I wanted to as a result. When I took a break to watch my beloved Detroit Tigers play the New York Yankees they rewarded me with a loss. I wanted a cigarette so bad that I... Sign in to see full entry.

Short and Sweet, Part 2

A little over two weeks ago I devoted most of a post to my intention of trying to keep my posts manageably short. It seems I succeeded a little too well. For 13 days I managed to keep my posts here so short that the combined word count equaled -- well, zero. That wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.... Sign in to see full entry.

The Senior Olympics rock!

I recently interviewed an 86-year-old local who won a gold medal in the shot put at the Nation Senior Olympics Games at Louisville, Kentucky. Not only did he win, he set a new record for the 85-89 age group. This gentleman, Walter Evick of Southern Pines, North Carolina (less than 20 minutes by car... Sign in to see full entry.

In the midst of the good ol’ summertime

…I’m forced to start thinking about football and what it will do to my blogging. I’ve already been asked to do a preseason football piece on one of the local high schools that has undergone a coaching change. It’s a month before school starts and they are practicing already. I haven’t seen a... Sign in to see full entry.

Short and sweet.

That’s an apt description of A, my one and only granddaughter. In truth she’s growing like a weed and probably isn’t the least bit small for a three-year old. She just seems short compared to her big brother, M. But this post isn’t about them for a change. Short and sweet also describes what I’m... Sign in to see full entry.
