I'd hoped to avoid spending very much money, but it might be better than having to purchase a new computer if I screw up the works. Norton offers a do-everything package that claims to be able to do everything, but it costs $80. $50 sounds a lot better if I can find someone reliable locally. I'll follow up on your ideas. It's killing me not to have enough online time to read you and others. But I hope to have that problem solved by Thursday afternoon at the latest.

If there's a Geek Squad or other computer/network repair service in your
area, I'd recommend taking your computer in for a cleanup. We have a company here in Quiettown that can build a computer from the ground up, and they do a diagnostic runthrough for about $50 -- can install any hardware or software you'd want. They can tell you what's what with local conditions, maybe even know about free security downloads...
