The day the fish came in

Last night was pretty chilly, down to low 40s F, and so today I brought in the deck garden, including the "water feature." It's a large roundish planter, about 20 inches across at the top, about two feet high. There is a little fountain in the center, and at night I have listened to the water softly babbling outside the door to the outside. It could have stayed out, except for the fish. My three big goldfish have lived in it for a few weeks now, and while carp are tough, and goldfish are carp, I... Sign in to see full entry.

I had to share this here...

A letter, written by my granddaughter, has recently resurfaced on Facebook, and I took the opportunity to preserve it on flickr, to share with you: https://flic.kr/p/yUzYUS Yes, she did it, and it's all true! Sign in to see full entry.

The Little House

The restoration of the little house on the big table continues with the chimney. Formerly plastic 'brickwork' it is now almost complete stonework, with actual stone bricks. The top may have to be worked in something else, though, as the bricks are about done, and it turns out--of course--that the store where I got them has discontinued them. Now you can also see the cut-out roof that allows play-access to the attic. There was a moment when the house caught the morning light shining through the... Sign in to see full entry.

It has been a busy week!

Costuming for CRIME AND PUNISHMENT is reaching a critical stage, the last week before I fly back out to Seattle for cataract surgery on the eye that's been waiting for over a month to catch up with the other. Much running around, the last-minuters calling for appointments for fittings, and gaps in the wardrobe being filled in. Meanwhile... Maybe you remember my bed woes when I first moved into this place, with nothing but an air mattress and a memory foam pad. They wobbled, and they were very... Sign in to see full entry.

Note to Seaworld whose tanks are still not big enough:

Resist the changing tides as much as you want, Seaworld... but the tides will change despite you: Human consciousness and conscience is on the rise and will outlast your self-righteous insistence that what you are doing to a self-aware, highly intelligent species is acceptable. Build fabulous aquariums to surround reefs of exquisite fish in habitats very like their natural ones. Educate about the oceans, But you can't claim to be honoring the seas when you so blatantly ignore the needs of some... Sign in to see full entry.

Village Elders

We may not know everything the kids know... but we know stuff they have not yet discovered, have not imagined, and can't remember because they weren't there. We know why we say, Dial a phone number, and who Gene Autry was, and we have watched the amazing films and wonderful actors many of the youngsters will never see because those films are not in color. We know how to write in cursive, how to write a letter, in cursive. We know how to count back change. We were there to see the first space... Sign in to see full entry.

Checking in...

Cool and cloudy today, like yesterday, as summer fades and the heat it baked into the land dissipates... I haven't been reading much lately: too much close screen-time messes with my vision for things like driving. Lately, I have had to be driving, too, going around hunting costume materials. The costuming for CRIME AND PUNISHMENT is going well, with most of the cast already having stopped by at least once to check out what's here and determine what's still needed. There will be some sewing to... Sign in to see full entry.

Moon is up!

On flickr, that is. Start here https://flic.kr/p/yfy9xS and click left to see my moon shots, starting with the funny/special effects/ didn't use a tripod ones, then getting on to the few that worked somewhat better. My cameras and skills are not up to the really fine images some people get, but I saved you the better ones. I drove over to Garden of the Gods for the moonrise, and watched the first of the eclipse there, but there were too many people, too many cars, and clouds were moving over the... Me to Little Kid Next Door: I have a mouse in my house! LK: Are you going to catch it? Me: Maybe. Would you? LK: Yep. Me: What would you do with it if you caught it? LK: I'd eat it. Little boy, 6 or 7, I think. Strange child... At 4, I remember one day in the hay barn chasing a mouse from the loft down into the soft pile of hay below... I felt something in my little cowboy boot and when Grandpa pulled it off my little foot, the mouse ran out! I was so mad, I had caught it, and it still got away!... Sign in to see full entry.

Costuming Adventures

For the next 6 weeks or so, while the actors rehearse and the stage manager sorts out the staging, PR sets up posters and press releases and... whatever else she can do to publicise the production... I am busy sorting and shopping and fiddling and meeting with actors to get them all appropriately costumed for CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. This production will be set in the late 1880s, pretty close to the era of the book, so the costuming is particularly fun and challenging. With a limited budget for... Sign in to see full entry.
