Thanksgiving in the mountains

Yesterday afternoon, Charlie, Rob and I drove up to Bailey, CO. It's about 9000 feet above sea-level, and the home of my best pal from high school who now lives with one of her daughters and son-in-law. The kids went off to his parents for the holiday, so she invited us to share turkey and trimmings. There is a great chance we will be snowed in with a 16 lb turkey, and trimmings, and 3 fridges full of food, not to mention, freezers and cupboards, plenty of warmth in a lovely house. Meanwhile, I... Sign in to see full entry.

Audition follow-up

Charlie's audition went well today, and he will not be surprised if he gets the call-back for next week. While there are only 4 spots for male actors, they expressed interest in his penny-whistle prowess, and might also call on him for some other aspect of the show. He has experience not only in sound design, but has designed sound effects for The Wild Hunt before, for his Live Action Role Play group. That's the project: a one-week workshop culminating in a presentation of The Wild Hunt,... Sign in to see full entry.

Driving to Denver

...where Charlie has wangled himself an audition at noon today for a project with Bill Pullman. If the name is slightly familiar, you might have seen him as the President in INDEPENDENCE DAY, or maybe as the biologist in LAKE PLACID. In other words, this is the biggest time thing Charlie has auditioned for yet. When he sent in his head shots and resume, they told him auditions had closed, but ended up making an appointment for him to come in anyway. Last night we spent a couple of hours... Well then...

The check arrived today, the bank was open late enough to deposit it, and the grocery store has in the special holiday ham that they only have for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. They have not been putting it out in the deli case for some unfathomable reason, but they are permitted to take one out of the buy-it-whole case, and slice of a couple of pounds on request. I duly requested 2 pounds, as I am not going to spend $60 for a whole big ham all at once. She brought it out, sliced off... Sign in to see full entry.

...and so it goes...

I'm waiting for a check to arrive in the mail which already seems a little late, and the mail truck swings by at 4:30 in the afternoon and leaves one piece of mail for the house behind us and a 'returned to sender' that was first sent out to my Mom in May 2013: the Mother's Day card she never got. I'm a little concerned about the check. Sign in to see full entry.

Let's see... recipes from the weekend...

We had a lovely Thai-ish soup made with a box of veg stock, with a can of coconut milk, juice of a juicy lime, some fresh basil, a dash of garlic powder and some turmeric. I added snow peas, shredded carrots, shitake and white mushrooms, asparagus, little pearl onions. At the end, I tossed in some chicken shu-mai. We made prawn and chorizo tacos using fresh corn tortillas heated up on a hot skillet. My quick-guacamole (mash avocado together with salsa from a jar) and cabbage were in mine. She... ...and back again!

It took 4 hours to drive from the Springs to Estes Park on Saturday, and 5 to get back today. Saturday, traffic through Denver and Boulder was slow. Today, I swung west of most of Boulder and all of Denver, taking Hwy 93 through Golden to meet up with I-470. And then there was blizzard. Last week it was a choice between getting the brakes fixed, or replacing the heater core in the truck. Great braking, but a cold, cold ride home with no defrost, so windows just a little open, and occasional... Sign in to see full entry.

Off I go again...

Not far, not long, and all by road... Truck is happy with repaired brakes, weather is sunny and will be mild, weekend bag is packed, and groceries are in the fridge in a bag. I'm driving up to Estes Park to cook for my sister. I never knew she really doesn't enjoy cooking because she does it so well, but there it is: She told me a few weeks back, when I shared a recipe, "You can come and cook for me any time!" nder I love to cook for people who like to eat! So--the weekend's menu is all worked... Sign in to see full entry.
