Now we know...

...that the protectee of the Secret Service fellas around the corner is Eric Holder, US Attorney General. The helicopter we hear now and then surveys the neighborhood before he comes home. The other night, the copter pinpointed Marika in a spotlight as she was suspiciously dog-walking. There are some lovely houses around this area, some quite large and elegant, and some smaller. Most all have small yards, except for older ones, grand or less so, that tend to have larger yards. I am sure all the... Sign in to see full entry.

what a nice surprise!

When my daughter bought something at Best Buy the other night, she used my number to get a few bonus points on my account, the checkout guy questioned the name. She said, no, it wasn't her name, it's her mom's, CL Redding. He said, "She's the writer? I've heard of her." How cool is that!? Sign in to see full entry.

Making it up

TAPS posted about her discoveries of the use of makeup in the 1950s, and it started me on this little amble through the slightly less distant past... I was never much into makeup--special occasions, and used with a light hand: makeup should be noticed only as an effect, not as a thing in itself, was my theory. It was some years later, when I had my theater support/costuming shop, that I began to sell theatrical makeup, and learn how to use it. Still, all about effect. Of course, theatrical... Beautiful day among the grandkids

There have been seriously troubled times of late, with a more-than-averagely rebellious 14-yr old... Things reached crisis point yesterday afternoon, and both kid and parents were once again running through routines of reactions that have never worked before, and are not likely to work now. It all runs it's ruinous course in a house where there is precious little privacy, and everyone in the house can hear pretty much every scold, threat, defiance, reasoning, etc that comes out at these times.... Intimate Angles

There are a few places in the kids' new house that are not full of boxes. Taking shots around them creates some nice close-ins that show some of the charms of this Tudor-style cottage. http://flic.kr/ps/rhS1C Sign in to see full entry.

There is Someone in the house down the street.

We have no idea Who. But it is Someone who requires around a dozen secret service guys, in and around the house, watching adjoining streets that open to the one where the house is that Someone is visiting. Or something. Very mysterious, very spooky, if they didn't look like a convention of Mormons in their identical dark suits. The suits are not very special, and maybe charcoal grey... So, to our disappointment, obviously they aren't the Guys in Black looking after extraterrestrials. Daughter... Sign in to see full entry.

Time and busyness!

Seems like there has been little time to write, at least, at times when I feel any urge to say anything. But getting used to the pace, getting used to shuffling between the new household of the NZ Daughter and husband and dogs and cat, and the established one of MD Daughter and family... helping with the settling in, and hanging out with the kids... They have been taking me out to dinner to some very nice places, and this morning, when I wobbled downstairs, there was a birthday card, and a... Sign in to see full entry.

Dancing Girl!

Here's a pretty moment: my eldest at a street fair today... http://flic.kr/p/dfha7B The style is American belly-dance, and the music is Irish. She choreographed the movements herself. Sign in to see full entry.

Arrived!

It's a charming neighborhood in northwest DC, where my daughter and her husband have bought an 80-yr old Tudor style house on a corner lot with some yard and so much over-grown greenery, that the yard will be a lot bigger when the greenery is brought under control. I like a wild garden, but this will benefit from a bit of discipline. The house is filled with boxes to unpack, and the animals have all moved in--two dogs and one cat, now. There are no hangers, and getting the boxes unloaded will... Sign in to see full entry.

Who Cares?

In this season of opinion polls, opinionated political/religious ranting, I have to ask, why on Earth should I care what everyone else thinks? Why does anyone care what I think, if I am just spouting off an emotional reaction to something about which I am sorely inadequately informed? Where's the value in opinions with no substance? Sure, pollsters are all about the numbers, the statistics, because counting the votes is all that matters: designing campaigns to move the numbers around.... Sign in to see full entry.
