Saturday with Alexa and Embers

Woke at 5am CoSprings time, feeling chipper. I suppose the body still on England time thought it was closer to 11am. Embers has been sleeping on or beside me for every nap and bedtime. She is responding well to her medication (prednisilone) and so, eating well since I left. That's a real relief! We started putting the liquid on her food as soon as it started working, so she doesn't have to bear it squirted into her mouth. I asked Alexa/Echo to play Mary Travers songs today, and have been... Home again, home again, jiggity-jig!

Well, up to the last bit, pretty jiggety. Then things kinda jogged sideways... First came the realization there was no way I could catch that 6:30 shuttle to the Springs from Denver International Airport: the time on my ticket and itinerary did not take into account Daylight Savings Time. Being assured I was in the right place to catch it, when it actually picks up on the other side of the airport made me miss the 8:30 shuttle. Another shuttle driver told me this at 8:45 after I'd been sitting... Sign in to see full entry.

Final English Morning

The old cat is snoring softly on the wide stone window ledge; outside, a bit of blue glows through soft misty cloud and there is a bit of rosy gold on the clouds. My packing is nearly done, regretfully heavy, but I won't have to strain my back to get it downstairs: Other, younger backs will do that. In this two weeks I have not done as much shopping as another week would have afforded, not coming home this time with interesting foods and clothing items for the costuming collection. but there are... Cream Tea in Chipping, and chickens

My daughter's mother in law gave her a coupon for a cream tea in the little town of Chipping, across the valley and behind Longridge Fell. A cream tea is the kind served with little crustless sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and some bite-sized cakes. One imagines fine china and silver, dainty porcelain cups and teapots, table cloths... This was a tiny little cafe sort of place, the china and silverware mis-matched, no cloth on the table--and delicious tea and food! And the people... Sign in to see full entry.

cat in the woods

Right on the edge of Walley, in the woods between town and the River Calder, I saw a most beautiful cat. It was a good-sized domestic feline with startlingly wild-like markings. Naturally, I spotted this beauty just when my camera had run out of juice, but you can get the idea of how perfect it looked in the equally wild--which is to say, not actually very wild--woods: https://www.pets4homes.co.uk/cat-breeds/bengal/ Sign in to see full entry.

Got me a little chair.

We went to Samlesbury Hall today, a sprawling two-storey, many-storied house that was built beginning in the 1200s. I took photos, of course, of the house and grounds and of a most charming little spinner's chair that was in the antiques gallery there with quite a reasonable plice tag hanging on it. It's like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Carved-Arts-and-Crafts-Spinning-Chair-William-Morris-Style-Flowers-/282383778211 but the back and seat are beautifully and deeply carved. It will... Sign in to see full entry.

Friday rain

When I checked the weather forecast for Manchester UK before leaving Colorado, I was promised dreary days, rain, cool winds and mist. What has actually happened has been several fine even warm days in a row, some days chilly and some windy, and not until today much rain at all. Even the rain isn't all that annoying. Spring is definitely on already, gardens brilliant with daffs and crocuses and primroses, and roadsides glowing with wild daffs and clouds of wild cherry blossoms. Today it has been... Thursday adventures

Today was the doggies' day for hydrotherapy: They walk in water and swim in a pool to strengthen legs and build stamina. Both of them have had leg surgeries to repair cruciate ligament tears, and this helps them stay limber, but oh how they ache the day after! The drive to the hydrotherapy place is along back lanes, between fields and clusters of trees, the classic English countryside. There will be photos in a little more than a week. I also am having some aches tonight as I took a bit of... Sign in to see full entry.

baby report

Elsa had her 3-month checkup today, and it is officially recorded now that she is 11.5 lbs, and is up-to-date on most developmental milestones. She is just a nudge or two from actual chuckles, and gives lovely spontaneous grins towards things she likes. She holds her arms out when she wants to be picked up, and arches her back to help when you do reach towards her. She watches the colors, movement and faces on the tv, and has begun to attempt to get anything she can get into her hands into her... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday Morning

From a very solid sleep I was awakened by someone calling me Granny... My daughter had need to put Elsa in my care while she went to clean up after the doggies who had not gone outside in time... So the Wee One was settled down beside me, her head on my shoulder, and she fussed and wriggled and protested, `not the mama' for a bit. But the combination of the heart-beat pat on the back, the shhhhing sound in her ear, and playing with her legs a bit as we do when internal gas is an issue--and she... Sign in to see full entry.
