Outsitting in her field

Embers pulled a vanishing act yesterday from the back yard. I didn't see her go, I didn't see her return--just that for a while she was not to be seen at all. I walked around the block and encountered Dave the dog guy in front of his place, asked if he'd seen a small dark cat in the past few minutes. He hadn't, but his dogs were quite friendly to me, and so was he. I'm very glad that we've mended the hostility that has existed there the past several years. It is cool again this morning and a... Garden morning

After actually chilly yesterday, today is about perfect with expectations of highs around 75F. The 5 lavenders and 3 salvias got their roots in the ground this morning before the sunshine came over the fence. I helped. On facebook yesterday there was a post from the Whalley In Bloom's Lavender Ladies who go around that English village looking after the public plantings. I commented on my coincidental and excellent buy--$3/pot--of lavenders and got a reply, a hint to put a handful of gravel under... Sign in to see full entry.

Morning has broken... and the heat, too

Forecast says mid 60sF for today's high, and only up into the 70s until the heat returns next Tuesday. But considering the 122F this past week in the Mojave Desert and 120F in Phoenix, and over-100 temps in the midwest and east, we are doing okay here. This morning at least one of the garden boxes will be filled in with more clean dirt and be a proper raised bed to receive some plants and seeds, mostly for flowers, though I also have some for carrots and long thin eggplants. Both those are... Sign in to see full entry.

Oh Hoppy Day...!

Usually, Embers wakes me, usually too early, walking around on me, attempting to pet and lick my face. I shift her off, encourage her to cuddle up beside me instead of on top of whatever is my highest point, instead of marching around me on her little cat feet that concentrate her whole weight one paw at a time, wherever. While we danced this dance of annoyance and exasperation this morning, I became aware that there was yet another person on the bed. Bunnabee. Yep, Bunnabee leaped up to join us... Our House: Playground or War Zone?

Since letting Bunnabee roam freely around the house I have discovered several things about rabbit habits and sense of humor. She still goes down to the bathroom to... go to the bathroom. She annoys Embers. Repeatedly, despite Ember's clearly expressed hostility. Bunnabee runs up to her, Ember swears at her, Bunnabee persists, Embers bats her on her bony little head, Bunnabee runs away... and around the furniture to come up behind Embers and annoy her from a new angle. For Embers, it's war; for... Sign in to see full entry.

Bunny

Last night I didn't confine Bunnabee to her chamber, feeling confident enough that the house is sufficiently bunnyproofed, and seeing how much she likes to free-range. She is less destructive to the carpeting, too, when she isn't bored. She likes the deck, and now the plants are shifted out of her reach, it's a good place for her to hang out. So... a few new pictures of Bunnabee eating the long grass that Charlie has just this afternoon removed from the garden boxes we set up several years ago,... Sign in to see full entry.

Cool is coming in...

with a strong breeze that dropped the temperature in the house upstairs 10 degrees in an hour or so. Tomorrow, the highs are forecast around mid 70s. Then next week, up to the 90s again. From now until Monday mid-moring, it is a time to savor! In 1964, the film BECKET was released. It starred Richard Burton as Thomas Becket and Peter O'Toole as Henry II who made his old carousing buddy Chancellor of England, and then, thinking he was being very clever, named Becket Archbishop of Canterbury.... Temperature rising...

90s F today, they say... I love the cool mornings when I can get things done, then feel fine about hanging out when the heat is oppressive until the sun goes down and cool evening comes on. That's how it goes if we don't get thunderstorms to cool the air earlier. There is always the Bunker downstairs where I can hang out, taking the laptop to be busy writing, or watch netflix or connect up for some conversation with a real person somewhere out in the world. When it gets really too warm upstairs,... Sign in to see full entry.

ow...

Okay, so here is what happened: I was coming inside from the back porch carrying a big old hammer and some other stuff, caught my foot on the leg of the plant stand by the door, had no hands free nor room to swing the other leg out to catch myself, ended up face-planting with the hammer and my glasses in between me and the carpet. So basically, I hit myself in the face with a hammer. I wore an icepack for a while, and cleaned the half-inch cut from the edge of the glasses. There are some odd and... Sign in to see full entry.

Dwatted Wabbit!

Note about house bunnies: You can't bunny-proof before the bunny arrives in the house because you can't imagine where the bunny will choose its hideouts. Also, you can't guage the bunny's determination to work around obstacles. And just because the bunny showed no interest in eating the plants in your garden on its first visit doesn't mean you can let it hang out in the garden unsupervised, ever. Getting more exercise is a good thing, it's true and needed. It takes a fair amount of exercise to... Sign in to see full entry.
