Wednesday--busier than I expected

This morning began with cleaning the kitchen, and coming up with an idea for breakfast. It turned out to be some cut up teriyaki meatballs with some cut up marinated artichoke hearts, all sauteed and mixed into scrambled eggs. But while the posts were getting shined, there was a great noise in the back yard. Bird noise. Two, later three magpies were hollering at each other in the trees next door. They don't make quite as harsh a noise as crows, but it is a very insistant sound. I am used to the... Sign in to see full entry.

Time doing what time does...

I went out into the yard this morning before the sun got too warm, and took a few shots... put them up on Flickr comparing the growth from May to now. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/70D2f4 The beets in the box are doing very well! Sunflowers are appearing here and there--very good at volunteering, as they fall from the birdseed. They are the all-yellow kind, in my opinion, the prettiest. I've heard that they can be toxic for other plants but so far these don't seem to prove that. The new... Sign in to see full entry.

Meh

This is one of those lay-about days, just can't seem to get enthusiasm up to move, let alone get anything done. The air feels heavy today. It's not that hot, only 31% humidity... barometer is at 29 and pointing downward. There is 35% chance of storm this afternoon. I'd like that! The latest brood has begun to hatch. I found a piece of small white shell down below the nest. Charlie and I went out to buy more garden soil, but neither of us has the will to carry the bags around and dump them in the... Early morning dreams and meditations

I have and remember the best dreams that come just before waking. This morning, I dreamed of planting a spiralling grove of gingko trees... starting at the center and spiralling outwards, adding a new sapling every year. I got to thinking how far apart they should go to have room to grow, though eventually, to grow side by side so close, they'd make a wall around a center. In the center, I'd have a pond, spring-fed, and a place to sit in comfort. It would all be set in a low place among hills,... Sign in to see full entry.

Getting things done

Cool this morning, temps expected to top out 30 degrees cooler than day before yesterday, and with thunderstorms promised for later. The doves sit by turns upon the nest; the fishtank filter runs like a stream over a short fall; the 'keets are quiet; distantly, voices of people and an occasional dog... I slept in an hour extra, dreaming of slyly taking pictures in China, and watching things go up and around an invisible vacuum hose, just for the fun of it. At the end, Abby Bartlet joined me... Popping the Bubble

What's happening these days is the breakdown of the body of American myths-- about where we came from, how we made our lives here, what we did and didn't do to form this nation. Truth, finally, is being revealed and acknowledged. Some have always known these truths, but most of America, brought up on myths and lies that made us look better than we ever were, were nested comfortably in the school-taught beliefs that we were the Good Guys, the Nice Guys. This process of dissolution of the myths is... Sign in to see full entry.

And now... the season of wildfires

Today the morning sunlight has that peculiar orangey quality it gets when filtered through smoke. There are no fires near Colorado Springs, but we get the smoke from all the fires west of here, and that includes California's fires, and all the ones in the southwest states, and a couple of them burning in Colorado on the other side of the mountains. At least one is burning near Durango, started by lightning strike. Yesterday I did a bit of repair to the reed fencing on the end of the deck very... Sign in to see full entry.

Ever think about living rough...?

There is a show, ALONE, which drops 10 survival experts in the Arctic wilderness around Slave Lake in northern Canada. They have 65 lbs of gear, ten items personally chosen. They are all experienced in living with, and off the land. They have a 'tap out' phone if they reach their limit for living rough. So far, two have tapped out. One fell and broke a leg. One ate unwisely and got too sick to carry on. At this time, the remaining 8 have been out there 10 days. They were dropped in... Sign in to see full entry.

Storms on the horizons

Winds are up again today, with promises of temps in the 80s F, and possibility of thunderstorms. So a typical Colorado Front Range day. Every day the US awakes to continuing protest... but the nature of the protest has shifted from chaos and desperation to be heard, to things like this: https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2020/06/12/43899496/an-estimated-60000-march-in-silence-for-black-lives?fbclid=IwAR0WcDTQw42KX5Hwzh-3r9A92CZNALU_sXVmKIryEQ4rmXG_ItUBEyHY2tE How are you doing with all the 2020... Calling out what doesn't work

Summer is certainly upon us here in the Springs, though there are reports of many inches of snow in Boulder, about 80 miles to the north. My sister is living there, now. She sold her home of 24 years up in Estes Park, and moved into a pretty nice senior community. She sounds happy to be there. The facility is very conscious of senior needs, and the coronavirus situation, and there has not been a single case there. She doesn't worry about lock-down or masking, being pretty smart about her health.... Sign in to see full entry.
