Midweekly on-goings

While the truck is in the shop--a/c problems being fixed this time, hopefully--and the lightweight stick-vacuum I ordered a couple of weeks ago arrived yesterday, Wednesday begins with getting some cleaning up done at home. The little vac is indeed very lightweight, and it will be easier to clean the stairs below the bird cage of scattered seed and husks. But it isn't very good at snatching up bits of down that cling to carpets. Okay, I have wide grey tape for that. The worries of the times are... Sign in to see full entry.

What, Saturday already...?

And here it is, Saturday again, and I have read but not written here for a week! All days are pretty much the same, so it seems, and a kind if comfy-chair/laptop/tv inertia sets in. Now, one of our own has had to be tested along with her family for Covid 19. Suddenly, it goes from numbers to specific people, and some we hold dear, at that. It is now a different kind of anxiety, and fear for someone in my own heart. I know that this is how it is for the dear ones of all the numbers, but this... Sign in to see full entry.

Sleepy Thursday

Ever have a day when you never quite wake up? I've been yawning and brain-fogged all day. The coffee never kicked in. I just want to have a nap--but someone is coming over to do some business with Charlie, and I have some things to show him, also. He's the potter I have collected quite a lot from, Peri Charlifu, and he has made some tea cups for Charlie's Patreon people for his upcoming book launch party-favors. Peri has been talking about raku pottery lately, and I have some pieces to show him.... Sign in to see full entry.

Another beautiful morning...

Cool now, easy to get some gardening done. I've pulled up a couple more beets, and there is a batch of things in the freeze-dryer to pull out, package and label this evening. It is all so quiet here in this neighborhood, even while we are all daily bombarded by the madness in cities all around the country. I don't expect it will last, but hunkerin' down is the plan for now. This doesn't mean I am not resisting the jaw-dropping outlawry of this mad administration. I do what I am able: I write, I... Future-pacing the larder

If this post brings on a bit of deja vu, it could be because I accidentally posted it already in someone else's comments. Comes of getting set to write an actual comment, getting distracted, coming back to an open writing space... We went out comet-spotting at 4:30 this morning, during "nautical twilight." We drove out eastward to where we had a fairly clear view of the eastern horizon. But we didn't see anything dramatic but a wonderfully brilliant Venus and a ruddy Mars. At least we got to the... New week check-in

Here it is, Monday again. Embers has just come out of the warm on the front deck, and I have closed things up to keep what's left of the morning cool inside. It's only 80F but will climb at least another 10 degrees in the next couple of hours. The doves have come and gone a few times these past several days. And the garden is growing well. Next year, if I'm still here, it will be bigger, not just a hopeful experiment after years of half-hearted, moderately committed ones with unfortunate... Sign in to see full entry.

Friday with visitors

I was enjoying coffee and a bit of breakfast out on the deck this morning, reading, when a little motion caught my eye. Across the deck, up beside a planted pot, a tiny nose, whiffling... then, bright little eyes, and little round ears...! Yes, bane of my kitchen but okay outdoors--a wee mouse! No doubt it comes for the bird seed that falls from the feeder. With the coming of cold weather, it will likely want to move indoors. It will not be welcome there. Also, while I was sitting there, one of... Sign in to see full entry.

Dove report

The young doves are now nearly as big as the parent who keeps on coming back to the nest and feeding them. I thought they would fly last week, but here they still are--sometimes flapping like mad, exercising those flight muscles, but mostly just still hanging out. I wish sometimes that they had more distinctive individual features, or that I could band them, or something. It would be most interesting to know if it is the same parents coming back to use the nest every time, or if some of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Happy Saturday!

It started cool this morning, and is quickly warming with no forecast of cloud or storm to cool the afternoon. I am glad to wake early: morning is when I get things done. I went out to survey the garden, and took the camera with me. Things are blooming and a few fruits have appeared on the tomato plants, and peas on the pea-ramid that was left behind the wysteria that I bought last summer, that didn't do so well. So I was delighted to discover amid the pea vines--fresh new wysteria leaves! And... Sign in to see full entry.

First Harvest

Yesterday I plucked some beets out of the garden, cleaned all the dirt off, and cut the roots from the greens. The roots ranged from very small to what a small beet looks like at the grocery store. I have not used them yet, but will probably toss them into soup or stir fry. I cooked and ate the greens last night. The start was a couple of pieces of meaty, thick-cut bacon. Onions and garlic went into the fat, then the chopped greens and the crumbled bacon and a splash of rice-vinegar. Cooked down... Sign in to see full entry.
