As if to reinforce, for those of us staying home, that change is sweeping the world, we are having high winds for the past couple of days. 20-40 mph with gusts up to 65... I have had to bring in some plants because the wind dries them to a crisp, and put some down on the deck floor because otherwise they will get there anyway, and sideways or upside down. Furniture blows over, cushions take flight... But since I put up reed fencing around one end and across the lower half of the front, it isn't... Sign in to see full entry.

Ups and downs with feathers
I saw the dove in an odd posture this morning, and I am thinking she is laying her two little white eggs today. Starting the countdown... 2 weeks to hatching, 2 more to flying. One of my original two parakeets has died. Seeing him just lying on the bottom of the cage, it was clear he was gone. I adopted these two, the young female, the older male, four years ago last spring. He was, they told me, ~5 years old. So 9 is very good innings for a 'keet, and this was not unexpected. I will be watching... Sign in to see full entry.

The Third Wish
I woke this morning from a dream in which I had been granted three wishes. The first was not too hard to come up with: perfect health! No more neuropathy, no more gout, no more weird-sightedness, no more diabetes! A body full of wellness, all the energy to go and do and dance! And perfectly-balanced brain chemistry, too, so no more depression, no more dysthymic never-quite-happiness! Of course there is also the 'time to enjoy it' codicil: I don't want to live forever, but I don't want to die as... Sign in to see full entry.

another song of summer
Add title A SUMMER AFTERNOON Heavy as hot wet flannel, every breath... I hate to sit or move against this August afternoon. Sticky-damp, clothes cling, a drag against ambition. Birds, lethargic, dull, sing only if they must, fly ghostlike if at all through dusty drooping trees. Cicadas ratchet on and on-- maddeningly constant; mosquitoes whine or strike unheard, the devils! Roses overblown and bright, relishing this tropic season, exude aromas heavy and too sweet. I languish, scowling,... Sign in to see full entry.

Evening...
THE MAGIC HOUR a sonnet of art and age Stare not at the Sun, we’re oft reminded, But in the Magic Hour, as the Poets tell Eyes can gaze and be not blinded-- The day’s work’s done, for good or ill. The Farmer comes home from the field, The Baker from the baking; The Vintner casks the final yield, The Maker ceases making... The Magic Hour, the Artist cherishes-- The Hour of rosy-golden light-- The Hour as the daylight perishes, Before the final fall of night... The last bird sings, his song... Sign in to see full entry.

As summer comes on with sultry days...
Add ti CALIFORNIA SUMMERS I lived three summers, age 3 to nearly 6, in northern California. This is how I remember it. Summer heat-- sweet relief in darkened hall beneath the fan, the rumbling wind, the storm that blew the cool all through the house… I’d catch a chill and die, they claimed. Disbelieving, driven out to play, I’d wait another chance… Summer feet-- freed from socks and keds not always sufficiently aware of bees among the clovers growing green in golden lawn… Dancing barefoot over... Waking to thunder
And also to the cooing of doves. Yes, the doves were back this morning, the adults cuddling up in the nest together. I don't think there are eggs yet, as they have both now flown off, but no doubt there will be some soon. It's what they do. The morning comes on glowering and grumbling. Well, we all have mornings like that. Yesterday I posted my first installment of HERETICS: Pilgrimage over on my Patreon page. I am waiting for feedback now, and getting ready to prep the next bit. Sitting here at... Sign in to see full entry.

Remembering the 60s
I was beginning to pay attention to the world outside my own life in the 60s, a time of gentle sprouting flowers inviting peace and simple happiness, even as Vietnam body-counts traumatized the country daily. There was the enthusiasm for new freedoms and the abuses of those freedoms; the flowers were tainted with drugs, and free love was both blessing and curse. Changing gender roles confused and frustrated. Authority took on sinister shadows, and we learned to trust warily if at all, because... Sign in to see full entry.

Witness
Got up this sunny morning around 7:30, and the second doveling has gone. So now is when I clean up the deck and arrange it for my personal use. There is a brief window in which to do this, I expect, considering that the adult doves will likely be back for another go 'round, in a day or two. This time, though, they'll have to put up with my occasional sitting out in the daylight. Amid the horror of violence in so many American cities, I see a thing that encourages hope: all the many cameras... Sign in to see full entry.

Saturday is Fly-day!
Another lovely, blue-sky morning... with promises of thunderstorms later... but the weather forecasts have not been very good with accuracy these past days. Yesterday it did cloud up, but nary a storm seen nor heard. I had a call from my sister now living in a senior community in Boulder. That's a rare thing, she is not much of a phone-talker. But her email has been wonky, so she called to let me know she received my latest, but could not reply. We had a great chat... She has found her street... Sign in to see full entry.
