Some mornings start with a groggy stumble about the house on the way to the comfy chair from which I use the laptop, can see the tv, and when the deck door is open, see what the doves are up to. This morning was the other kind... A particular bird-song drew me from bed to deck to see if I could spot the source of the sort of 'cheep-cheep-trillllll' I was hearing. It went on a while, but I never did see it. But I did notice some of the plants were limp, so I went in to fill a couple of 2-litre... Sign in to see full entry.

Cool and quiet... so far!
The day is sunny but more cloudy and a little cooler than the forecasts I have read. There is a light breeze, and I have bent back the reed-wall that I shifted when the storm winds were strong, to break the force of it a bit on the doves. Embers has been wanting to be outside a lot since summer turned real. And she sometimes goes out of the yard, something I wish to discourage. I need to get her a new collar with a bell so she is easier to locate, or failing that, easier for someone else to call... Sign in to see full entry.

Housekeeping and doves
Looks like the doves have over-built the nest. More twigs with every brood, and after a while, it gets pretty flat on top. So this time I am a little concerned with the dovelings, as they grow bigger, that one or both might be actually fall off. So the other day, I stuck a basket on the table underneath the nest--a wide open thing, one of those ones that you put a pad of some sort in, then fill in with soil, then plants. This is an old one, the pad of shredded stuff pretty stale under what's... Sign in to see full entry.

just a few photos from yesterday
https://flic.kr/p/2jfJYxS start here, click left for the right sequence. The trees in the neighborhood have grown some since I moved in here 6 years ago, and there is less sky to see from deck and front porch. Yesterday, though, I could see the rain coming out of the west even as the big storm clouds moved in from the northeast. Then there were camera problems, and I had to switch out to the smaller one for the first shots. Problem, apparently, was a full memory card, because it worked without... Sign in to see full entry.
Thunder and lightning!
This morning all is quiet and for a while, cool. Yesterday, though, it was an afternoon of weather alerts warning of coming thunderstorms, big hail, an 'a couple tornadoes' as the report online put it. And, of course, with all those, flash flooding in all the creeks and rivers in the region. Hail did not fall here, nor did I see any twisters. But the downpour was great, and the flooding a certainty. People who shelter under bridges by creeks... In past events, lives have been lost. The alert was... Sign in to see full entry.

Wednesday--busier than I expected
This morning began with cleaning the kitchen, and coming up with an idea for breakfast. It turned out to be some cut up teriyaki meatballs with some cut up marinated artichoke hearts, all sauteed and mixed into scrambled eggs. But while the posts were getting shined, there was a great noise in the back yard. Bird noise. Two, later three magpies were hollering at each other in the trees next door. They don't make quite as harsh a noise as crows, but it is a very insistant sound. I am used to the... Sign in to see full entry.

Time doing what time does...
I went out into the yard this morning before the sun got too warm, and took a few shots... put them up on Flickr comparing the growth from May to now. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/70D2f4 The beets in the box are doing very well! Sunflowers are appearing here and there--very good at volunteering, as they fall from the birdseed. They are the all-yellow kind, in my opinion, the prettiest. I've heard that they can be toxic for other plants but so far these don't seem to prove that. The new... Sign in to see full entry.

Meh
This is one of those lay-about days, just can't seem to get enthusiasm up to move, let alone get anything done. The air feels heavy today. It's not that hot, only 31% humidity... barometer is at 29 and pointing downward. There is 35% chance of storm this afternoon. I'd like that! The latest brood has begun to hatch. I found a piece of small white shell down below the nest. Charlie and I went out to buy more garden soil, but neither of us has the will to carry the bags around and dump them in the... Early morning dreams and meditations
I have and remember the best dreams that come just before waking. This morning, I dreamed of planting a spiralling grove of gingko trees... starting at the center and spiralling outwards, adding a new sapling every year. I got to thinking how far apart they should go to have room to grow, though eventually, to grow side by side so close, they'd make a wall around a center. In the center, I'd have a pond, spring-fed, and a place to sit in comfort. It would all be set in a low place among hills,... Sign in to see full entry.

Getting things done
Cool this morning, temps expected to top out 30 degrees cooler than day before yesterday, and with thunderstorms promised for later. The doves sit by turns upon the nest; the fishtank filter runs like a stream over a short fall; the 'keets are quiet; distantly, voices of people and an occasional dog... I slept in an hour extra, dreaming of slyly taking pictures in China, and watching things go up and around an invisible vacuum hose, just for the fun of it. At the end, Abby Bartlet joined me...
