Exciting week!

It started calm and balmy, temps in the 50s and even 60sF, and then the winds came down as they do along the Front Range of the Rockies from time to time. Gusts and gales! House-shaking, howling, wheezing through cracks kind of wind. The drive on Wednesday evening down the freeway to Colorado Springs' World Arena was a little more exciting that usual freeway travel for that reason. It was also exciting because we were going to see Cirque Du Soleil. The show was Dralion and it was mostly... Sign in to see full entry.

We watched ALIEN again the other night, for the first time in years.

It is, without question, one of the best sci fi movies ever made. If you haven't seen it, if by some wonderful chance no one has ever exposed you to the best dreadfulest scenes or the terrible outcomes, then you have ahead of you one of the great movie treats of all time. If you have seen it, or if suspense makes you throw up, then you might try DARK STAR instead. DARK STAR is listed as a 'cult classic' because it is a very low-budget, quirky, funny sci fi film, and was, in fact, Dan O'Bannon's... Sign in to see full entry.

Schadenfreude Revisited

There is reaction, and then, there is response. The first is chosen by the subconscious, emotionally-based or rote; the second is reasoned, chosen with deliberation and consciousness. The first need not be mindless; the second need not be heartless. After the initial reaction to the Fireball Kid, and the logic of the emotional satisfaction I wrote of, in all fairness to the Kid and to my own view of the Universe really, I have to make a few further points. No one is truly just a jerk. No one is... Sign in to see full entry.

Fire In The Hole!

The snow yesterday cancelled some early classes at my lad's university, but he called the instructor who said yeah, it was cancelled, but he'd be there anyway at the Props Shop, and whoever showed up, they would find something fun to do. I went drove him to this interesting off-campus building, and came in to meet the instructor,RB, and see the shop. I always wanted... lusted for... a huge warehouse space like this, to contain my theater-support stuff and business! Oh, the fun things on those... Sign in to see full entry.

Gag me... Really?

I haven't written here in a while, and even now there are things I'm not sure I can talk about. I quit the publisher. I don't mean to quit editing, but there is a great difference between doing that work for a writer, and doing it for a publisher. I like working with writers, helping them to prepare their work for publishers. Mostly, I like to be clearly on the writer's side, paid by the writer. Deadlines are more flexible, and there is no one telling me I must accept an assignment that normally... Snow Moai

There was perfect snow for making snowmen a couple of weeks ago, and one of my son's housemates and he went out to play. Here are the results, finally--which took a while because my laptop has decided it no longer knows my camera memory cards, and so these had to find an alternate route to Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Sign in to see full entry.

unexpected and astonishing. Part 2

This is a reprint of a post from last June, followed by what happened today... There is a story-- Many years ago, 1970 or thereabouts, my father, Dr Kenneth Franklin, who was an astronomer, played with an idea: that if we meant to colonize the Moon--this was during the Apollo program--we would need to have a different way to determine time there: the clocks and systems of the Earth would be unsuitable for the Moon. So he invented a time system for the Moon. The Helbros watch company took this... Sign in to see full entry.

Images of Winter

Snow Magicks!

It has always been one of my most magical memories: watching the snow fall down out of a dark sky into the back yard and woods, lit by floodlights. That was in New Jersey--the part of it less infamous than the nasty, stinking oil-refinery parts, or the now truly distasteful 'Jersey Shore.' The image of sitting in a warm room, looking out on falling snow, on cold and the slight darkness of a day of snowstorm... Then, folk coming in, drawn to the lamp in the window--all jollity and gladness, to be... Sign in to see full entry.

Christmas spirit is "on" this year!

Back from shopping--Charlie and I found a cute little noble fir, about 3ft tall, got a shiny plastic bucket to 'foot' it in, and some Christmas wrapping paper to make little origami thingies--gotta go back into deep memory to remember those patterns. We have some little lights from halloween, and Charlie is a genius with duct tape--he has some notions for decorations. Two young cats=unbreakable ornaments. I have some bright Indonesian fabrics to wrap the bucket and drape the table. So... Our... Sign in to see full entry.
