Tell the jerk you're a professional and would never discuss
confidential matters with anyone outside the company. And if you know anyone in the legal profession you might do a bit of CYA and have a short conference with an attorney. And keep every email, sticky note, etc. they've ever given you. Document everything. That should ease your mind, and keep the publisher (who acts strangely jumpy about what you know) off your back.
