No poisons here...

Kabu wrote today about her garden and her neighbor, the garden spider who is one means of keeping down insects of more damaging kinds. I have spiders here and there in corners that I leave alone because they cut down the mosquito and fly populations. Now and then, I clear the evidence of their effectiveness, and they have to make new webs. We have hornets, too. Not bees: I would rather see bees! The hornets hover around the shingles on the roof, crawl in and out all day. I would hate to be the... Sign in to see full entry.

Chiff Chaf reminded me...

...in his blog about cakes and icing. When my father's father was courting my father's mother, he came to the farmhouse for a family dinner made entirely by the young lady, to demonstrate her cooking skills, really. The dinner was quite acceptible, apparently, until the end. Dessert was a cake with a boiled icing. Two things can go wrong with a boiled icing: if it isn't cooked long enough, it is too liquid and runs off the cake. If it is cooked too long, it cools like cement. Hers was the... Idyllic day...

with temperatures moderate all day, and a nice downpour in the afternoon to wash the dust away. This is several cool days in a row, and it feels mighty nice! I was just about to sit down and watch some streaming of the Olympics, when the radio began to pour out Beethoven's Pastorale, and I have to listen! Such grand, heart-lifting sounds! Speaking of heart-lifting, Adnohr and I conversed a bit on Facebook, and I made a decision. Now, instead of sharing all the absurdities and outrages of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Just a few new pictures

My hands were full most of the day, and it just wasn't a photo taking day... so, these two... of the same thing. And then, last night's clouds gathering at sunset to give the area a fantastic light-show last night... Warnings on the radio for flash-flooding across three counties... We are safe enough, the nearby creek being well down in a valley of its own, it would have to rise 20 feet to get to the top, higher still to get our feet wet at home. But in the mountains, and on many roads the water... Sign in to see full entry.

Back without disaster

But as usual after a day at the Ren fest, I am plumb wore out! I indulged in one thing and another, drank more diet cola than I have in the past year, spent a great deal of time at the Sky Chairs shop. That's the place where the swinging chair on my deck came from. Anyone is welcome at the shop to try the chairs... for as long and often as they like. By the end of the day, legs exhausted and low back arthritis, I hobbled in and relaxed in one of the chairs for about 40 minutes until my back... Sign in to see full entry.

Ever have one of those days...?

Or moments, like right at the start of the day, that feels all... premonitiony? Blood sugar numbers are high... Internet won't connect and I am cut off from most of my social network... then, suddenly, the power goes out... And I am taking Charles up to the Ren Fest and staying all day, leaving in half an hour... no, 20 minutes... and I have yet to get out of my jammies... vaguely headachey... Things just feel a little off, even after the power comes back on. So it wasn't the EMP scenario.... Sign in to see full entry.

A job done, a project begun

I have just finished the first round of edits on Marika's 51 page dissertation. Glad to get it accomplished a day before she has to have it. There may not have to be another full round, just a final proofing for typos and suchlike. Meanwhile, the morning has been cool and windy with lots of clouds and little blue in the sky. Refreshing! Now I can get back to working on another project for the Compass Rose: a show of segments based on my Lays of Middle-earth for the celebration of the Birthdays... Sign in to see full entry.

Quiet Sunday

Sunday started off too early, waking at 5am, having a bit of breakfast and laptop time, then being sleepy enough to go back to bed for a couple of hours. Embers now has a collar with a tiny bell that sounds a bit like cricket-song, and that is the only way I am aware that she is about to appear on the bed, about to walk over the hills and dales of myself with her pointy little feet... ow! She might settle on high ground for a while, or depart as almost-silently. When I wake, she is often curled... Sign in to see full entry.

Mama-mia, that's a mighty hair-ball!'

I am wondering today, a couple of days since Embers ejected a huge long mass of what technically would be called a hair 'ball' whether such a thing can interfere with digestion. At least 5 inches of her digestive track was filled with groomed hair, and now, only two days later, the hollow bony space between her pelvic bones seems to be filling in already. There's no knowing how long it's been developing. As much hair as I brush out of her undercoat every time she lets me brush her, would not add... Sign in to see full entry.

Friday Funday

So, right up the street today, about a mile from here, Donald Trump is about to rally his troops. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, much to the dismay and anger of many professors and students, has okayed his visit. I daresay there will be protestors as well as his benighted fans to make the occasion festive. I won't be going. Maybe instead I will drive up Pike's Peak to enjoy the Big Picture in which this lunatic is only just a very small bit, not even visible from there. UCCS... Sign in to see full entry.
