When my father's father was courting my father's mother, he came to the farmhouse for a family dinner made entirely by the young lady, to demonstrate her cooking skills, really. The dinner was quite acceptible, apparently, until the end. Dessert was a cake with a boiled icing. Two things can go wrong with a boiled icing: if it isn't cooked long enough, it is too liquid and runs off the cake. If it is cooked too long, it cools like cement. Hers was the...
