slow starting again today

We decided not to make the long trip up to Fort Collins today for the Hobbit Parties at a tavern called Dungeons & Drafts. Charlie needs to be building a cathedral today, and I can't do the stage set-up without hime, and it's a really long trip on the hope of getting some donations in a hat. I can easily be a hobbit here. The cathedral... yes, he is building one in about two days, because John Merrick, around the early 1900s built one. Well, a model of of one, on his dining room table. John... Sign in to see full entry.

And so it grows...

In case you've been following this, The DressUp Box is well and truly open for business. There are still a few touches to add, like the curio for jewelry, and more signs and handouts to let visitors know that all sales benefit The Compass Rose Traveling Theater, and what that is exactly. I've re-posted the sequence of development over there on Flickr so all the photos are side by side. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/Py15dn Sign in to see full entry.

So... International Talk Like A Pirate Day!

What's a pirate's favorite letter? You might think it would be aRRgh... But no. The pirate's true love is the C. What is the pirate's favorite fast food joint? It's a toss-up between Arrrby's and Long John Silver's. If you dress up like a pirate on this day of days, and visit Krispy Kreme, they'll give you free donuts. We were gonna do that, make a party of it, but no one else could make it, and the nearest KK is 50 miles away. How can there be no Krispy Kreme shop in Colorado Springs?? So... Afters Remarks

We are home from the Northglenn Pirate Fest, a fine time, a smooth trip all the way, but maybe next time we will stay another night rather than drive the ~80 miles back to the Springs exhausted and in the dark. Beautiful venue: EB Rains Park, a gem of green lawns, happy little trees, and a wide pond big enough for a pirate ship and a cardboard/duct tape boat regatta. Perfect weather: not too hot, not too windy, and no precip at all! It would have been a real bugger to deal wi th inclement... Sign in to see full entry.

Pirate Fest--so far!

Early waking in the hotel that was part of our contract with Northglenn... They put us up at the Marriot, a nicer place than I would pay for myself! I have it on good authority--My son-in-law who travels constantly in his work--that from around $50 up to around $200/night, they are all pretty much alike. This room, at just over $100 has beat that expectation. There is a lovely walk-in shower, and the whole room is very user-friendly with, for instance, a lightswitch by the bed which turns on and... Ready to roll!

The plan was to get hitched up early today, take the stage for a practice run around the block just to remember the feel of it and make sure everything is working as it should. But what with one thing and another that had to get done, it was around 8pm and dark except for the brilliant full moon and the street lights before we were ready to attempt it. This is the first time we have tried to hitch at night, and with the stage on a slanting driveway. I backed the truck around the corner of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Busy busy day!

Took time out for a haircut today, then did a bit more costume shopping for piraty stuff... bought some sea-greenish/greyish paint and Charlie, with some help from Vale, is painting backdrops for the stage, transforming it into a pirate ship! We ordered rattan poles last week, and they arrived today, to replace the bendy closet poles previously used to hold up the shade cloth canopy over the audience space. So, Charlie will also be switching out the hardware to the new ones. Meanwhile, I am... Sign in to see full entry.

FYI

Our black widow spider is relocated to a remote shrubbed area in Garden of the Gods, where she should be in no one's way, but food will come her way. She scampered off very quickly. The bit of stuff in the jar with her was not, in fact, an egg clutch, but a lunch. Looking at it closely, I noted it had legs though it was well-wrapped in web. Sign in to see full entry.

Now, the next thing...

The last two performances of WAR OF THE WORLDS had the best audience numbers yet, with a lot of good friends and other folks in the business who are among the best to be seen by if you are aspiring to work with the Colorado Springs area theater people. All of our actors are new to the public stage, and the heads of the Millibo Art Theater, Funky Little Theater, and the director of the Cottonwood Center for the Arts were there last night to see how good they are. At the final curtain call,... Sign in to see full entry.
