Happy Birth Day

Yesterday my baby daughter had her "39th" birthday, which she Facebooked she's ignoring. For one thing there's law school lectures, papers due, a long commute to and from St. Pete, and the 'pleasures' of peri-menopause. Some days she can't help fanning herself in class due to unwanted hot flashes. I... Sign in to see full entry.

For the Birds...

I may have mentioned the old bird feeder broke about a week ago. It hung on a black cord, swung in the breeze, moved under the landings and takeoffs of birds, and of course the cord wore through. Of course it was broken off inside the tube that connects the top to the seed container and the only way... Sign in to see full entry.

Old Flame, New Game

Vicki told us at the writer's group meeting she'd received a phone call 'out of the blue' from her ex, who we'll refer to as A. She hadn't seen or heard from him in fifteen years, he'd been incarcerated the last she'd heard, one of those stupid crook arrests where he practically jumped into the back... Trucked

Son Joe bought a new Ford F150 four-door with all the bells and whistles. There's something called blue tooth that allows him to dial up people and make phone calls using voice commands. Kinda reminds me of the old Star Trek programs when Jean Luc Picard would say "Earl Gray. Hot." Joe is having a... Sign in to see full entry.

Numbers

I admit it, I count things. How many steps from the front door to the car. How many miles from here to there. How many eggs left in the carton. How many squares of chocolate in the package. How much snow and ice still on the sidewalk - in inches. Didn't get myself out to the garage to bring in the... Sign in to see full entry.

Old poem for the new day

Regretful Egret A regretful egret flew to Jung sat on an Egyptian scroll and said he’d had a dream that he’d danced with a beautiful woman a woman in red, perfumed and sung about by poets renowned for glorious words who spread her palms and said she’d had a dream that she’d danced with a handsome... Items from a Writer's toolbox...

I wrote a historical novel about Miss Eloise the schoolmarm who doubled as a soiled dove saloon hostess while she gathered info, formed a gang and prepared to rob the bank. Her antagonist was the Marshal, Ben - a bulldog of a man who wasn't about to let her get away with it. In the first scene Ben... Sign in to see full entry.

On The Job: 1960

I was one of the first half-dozen women hired at the college when SIU-e took over the former Shurtleff College campus in Alton in 1960. My job title was Secretary III, and I worked in the Physical Plant department. Physical Plant is where the custodians, carpenters, plumbers, electricians,... Sign in to see full entry.

About the weather

I guess I'd better get to the store for eggs and cranberry juice before the weather hits. For some reason our News Channel 4 has sent a weather crew out to the suburbs. Not the St. Louis suburbs - the Kansas City suburbs. Yesterday they reported from Manhattan and this morning about 4:30 from... Sign in to see full entry.

Bad weather coming

The weather man is tracking a couple of merging systems moving out of three directions, a cold front from up Canada way, a warm humid low coming up from the Gulf of Mexico and a third system coming straight west from California. Those of us in the middle of the country, who've dodged "the big one"... Sign in to see full entry.
