Maybe he strayed down from up her. I see huge ravens all the time, so many that I watched carefully when I would put puppy Smooch outdoors. Those birds are BIG!!

Sounds like a raven to me, too.
They tend to be larger than crows, and more solitary. Though they do pair up, and just about everyplace I've been, there has been the 'dawn patrol' of a pair of ravens, cruising over the landscape just a few wing-lengths apart.

Very nice! I love it when unusual birds visit our backyard, although the regulars don't necessarily agree, especially in the case of hawks or the odd preregrine falcon! From your description, particularly the size of the beak, this may well have been a raven, unless you have very delicate, elfin thumbs...

I guess he was trying to properly introduce himself, and let you know he'll be back with his buddies for more food! Hopefully it wasn't a threatening nod as if to say "And you'd better have that food ready for us . . . or else!"
