Reading Aloud

I was number 11 on the list of 23 readers at Coffee Heaven's open mike last night. Actually the open mike was the idea of the University's English department, and the readers included a few undergrads, a couple grad students and half a dozen or so professors, a few of whom are published authors, and... Don't worry, it's not about politics.

It's about voting. My mother was fourteen when women in the US got the right to vote. She probably made it to the polls some time after her first child was born - she was married at 16, my sis was born when Mom was 19. All I know for sure is that she never missed an election during all the years I... I just realized why so many ultra-conservative candidates don't get it.

It's not their fault, really. Their church-run high schools didn't (do not) believe in sex education. Their instructors didn't talk about biology -- about changes in the body, about hormones or cycles or even about what naked bodies look like. Their teachers avoided any subject that might make the... This stupid election... check that: I mean these stupid politicians

Stupid is springing up all over. We've had two years of rhetoric and gossip and wild accusations. One guy make some ridiculous medieval comment, and then another backward old boy says something even worse. Candidates at various levels used to have common sense enough to leave some things unsaid.I... Sign in to see full entry.

Blogit Writers on Upswing -- Caused by Moon Phases?

Some weeks things go a little blah - here in my happy messy writing nest, and on FB and Blogit as well. Maybe it's not reality. Maybe it's my perception. But this week, as the moon rounds to first quarter on its way to full, the posts are sharper, the comments are right on target and provocative,... Sign in to see full entry.

Coffee on a Rainy Afternoon

I had just quit editing some "finished" bit of writing and was taking my empty cup back to the kitchen for a refill when there came a knock knock knock on my chamber door. (Such a gloomy day, thunderous and smitten with the occasional flash, brings on echoes of Edgar Allen Poe.) It was Guy, bringing... Sign in to see full entry.

Idyllic autumn day, and the library too...

I stepped out onto the porch with my coffee cup and took a deep breath. Sunshine made all the golden leaves on the front yard maple trees glow as though they radiate their own light. There had been clouds and a bit of rain yesterday, so the air was fresh and I had to take several deep, appreciative... Sign in to see full entry.

A poem from the '99 collection

The Science Channel There was nothing on but the science channel and a look – spectacular – through the Hubble at galaxies fighting gravity, the beautiful gases and star cities whirling in dancing masses. We thought for a while, some decades ago it was shrinking, it was a matter of time till we... Sign in to see full entry.

Local Authors Fest at The Public Library

There were a dozen local writers at the library on Sunday, all with copies of their books to autograph and sell. Son Guy went along with me, after we had attended little Maddie's sixth birthday party. The first woman I spoke with had written an expose of her former workplace. She'd been fired from a... Louise Erdrich -

If you haven't found this author yet, may I suggest you do. She's amazing, as a writer and as a person. Bill Moyers.Com recently posted on FB a video interview with Ms. Erdrich, who has been nominated for a Pulitzer, and published at least five best-selling novels. She has the gift of storytelling,...
