Another for Kabu

Responding to our Aussie's comment to Jimmy A. in his recent post regarding inappropriate dressing. http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/4948273195/ It was an accidental shot, I just wanted the cockatoo with its crest up--timing is always an issue for me, so I didn't bother to frame carefully, I just snapped the shot, and was annoyed that I'd gotten someone else in the shot... until I actually saw it, and realized it was just possibly my shot of the day. This one's for Wiley

I found this wonderful piece of wood-working at an estate sale. The maker, a man named Gary, gave it to the neighbor whose sale it was, and it fell into my hands for a mere $5. It is an adjustable plant stand, with an ingenious system for making it work: http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/8542234590/ Go here, then work your way left. (after the three photos of the stand, the next two are for Kabu ) Sign in to see full entry.

Getting things done

Today started with a stop at a coffee house downtown, where I enjoyed good coffee, a nice little quiche and a bit of reading. The show that Charlie has been props manager for is a zany sort of rock-opera based on the life of Andrew Jackson. It's called BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON. I was able to sit in on a rehearsal, since I would not be around for the opening (this past Wednesday) and while it was entertaining, I was left with a keen sense of having forgotten my US History from high school. At... Sign in to see full entry.

Repairs accomplished

After filing the police report, I tried to call my insurance company, but they weren't picking up, so I said, The heck with em! and started looking for a repair shop. Found one about 3 miles away, and just drove over--glad that it was a warm and sunny day!--and the very nice man at the counter quoted me under $200, and could do it that very afternoon. Insurance deductible is well over $200, so the heck with all that complication, paperwork, etc: the job was done, and I also got a broken... Sign in to see full entry.

Unwelcome excitement

Sometime during the night, someone smashed my truck's driver-side window. It is, naturally, a mess of gem-like glass shards, and upsetting, not to mention inconvenient and expensive. Filing a police report online would be possible if we had not found a glove, a metal bolt and other evidence that it was deliberate and not just the weather. We also found the ash tray pulled out of its socket--something we never touch, ourselves. We couldn't leave things untouched, Charlie needed to get a ride up... Sign in to see full entry.

The next phase

Thank you all for your enthusiasm and comments, I'm so glad no one said, "You didn't sign a lease, did you?" or "It's not the worst place I've seen." --or, it is. On Tuesday, the next phase begins when I get in the truck and head west, returning to Olympia, WA to collect what will fit in the truck: my own bed, shelves and dressers and boxed-up stuff, and my dear old cat, Violetta. One of the other cats, sweet little Magic, age 13 (like Violetta) went to his final sleep. He had thyroid and kidney... Sign in to see full entry.

This is one of those mornings...

As I sit here writing in my well-placed chair, nearing 6:30, the mountains have begun to glow: still at pink, but warming up with each passing moment... yes, definite gold in there now... Behind the tree branches, a sight that will be gone with the opening of spring leaves, I see the sunrise also striking the red rock of the Garden of the Gods. From this angle, they are just below Pike's Peak. (Here's a link to the Garden: http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/sets/72157630765050936/ ) And... Sign in to see full entry.

Another early morning

Waking at 5 again this morning... When the sky began to lighten, and the mountains were just visible, I sat with a cup of coffee and a book in the chair that is placed to catch the best view, and I read, while waiting to see if the light and mountain would put on a show today. I'm reading Umberto Eco's THE NAME OF THE ROSE, not for the first time, but the first time in several years. If you've ever seen the movie, you know the story already. It's a fine movie, visually stunning, the casting like... Sign in to see full entry.

View to the west

It's the fifth morning, waking up in my new place. The first, I woke before dawn, and so, when the pink rose in the east, outside the back windows, it glowed like rose and gold off the slopes and ridges of Pike's Peak, directly west of the front windows. I have arranged my chair and put up a cafe-style curtain across the lower part of the livingroom window to eliminate the street and houses from the view, and I sit here every morning, watching sunrise on Pike's Peak, as if it's just me and the...
