Close Encounters of the Mysterious Kind

It must have been 1959, I was living in a little town that was mostly a pit stop on the way somewhere - its outer neighborhoods mushrooming out of ground that had been cornfields the previous growing season. I had two little tykes, 3-year-old Lorrie, and 6-month old Dan, who stayed with my... Sign in to see full entry.

Nurse Mary Anne -

My last pre-dawn at dear old Anderson, time to wake up for vitals and my thyroid meds, and here's this tiny little blonde nurse, maybe 95 pounds soaking wet, chirping to apologize for waking me, filling in the new day's info on the wet marker board on the wall. Good morning, she says. Have they... Sign in to see full entry.

Caregivers: conversations before dawn

This cheerful little night nurse-tech came on with the RN shortly before midnight. She's late 20-something, African American with a dark complexion and beautiful smile. Donna. Checks my vitals: temp, heart rate, blood pressure, makes notes. How you feelin' sweetheart? I think I'm better. But the... Sign in to see full entry.

I'm ba-ack!

I missed you guys, and I've got a lot of catching up to do. Will get around & make comments as the energy holds out. Brain fog happens to the best, youngest, etc., so I should not be surprised to find myself feeling out of it... Can you spell relapse? Shortly after I posted last time, I got sick,... Nap time...

I fixed oatmeal for breakfast, ate about half of it. My taster's not working right. I also threw out 3/4 of my cup of coffee. My favorite raspberry tea tastes yucky, and even though I've brushed a couple times, my mouth tastes like the bottom of a bird cage. Got to feelin' whiney, took a pain pill... Oscar Pistorius / "Blade Runner"

Unless you don't like track & field, the Olympics or human interest stories, you know more than I do about Oscar Pistorius, aka "Blade Runner." He's the superior South African athlete who qualified for the 400 meter race, along with many others who had trained long and hard, sacrificed other parts... Sign in to see full entry.

Old joke

There I sat, morose and blue, when someone came along and said "Cheer up. Things could be worse." So I cheered up, and sure enough, things got worse. Ta-dum dum... Sign in to see full entry.

Sleeping much better these days...

It takes a bit of time to get used to a new bed. I've had this mattress for more than 20 years, a Serta, and have over time worn a nice little valley that accommodates my hips very well. The indentation allows me to sleep and get up with only the slightest of back aches, and I've got extra sets of... Sign in to see full entry.

I've been gone.

Not far - just seven miles up the road to the hospital. Have been suspecting my gall bladder was getting hot for several days, a recurrence of some pressure - pain that had been bothering me while we were all so involved with the kids' father and his long-running crisis. So Sunday afternoon I... Sign in to see full entry.

Ma Nature is teasing again.

She's flinging scarves of cloud around, and the morning is cool for a change. It feels like it could rain, unlike yesterday which was dry as a bone and smelled of dust. In my reading of Tony Hillerman's series of novels about Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo tribal police and his young Sgt. Jim Chee, I... Sign in to see full entry.
