The rains are coming...

November is the wettest month of the year around these parts. Last year, it broke records. Certain areas of western Washington are under flood warnings, with high waters possible by tomorrow night. We are not in a flood zone where we live, but along with power-outage supplies, perhaps we should get water-wings for Davy. In fact, there was a winter when there was a lake stretching across three properties at the front of our driveway. We live a ways back from the road, down an easement between... And the votes roll in...

except for those who didn't bother or didn't manage to get their votes in. Well, if you don't vote, you don't get to complain. Which won't stop a few, who think they are entitled to the government they want without the effort of voting. I met someone today, a young woman working behind the fish counter at a local grocery store who didn't know the difference between 'frozen' and 'thawed.' How old were you when you learned the difference between those two? This isn't a case of saying, "I forgot to... Sign in to see full entry.

I almost think the sun is shining--

Here, the rains have started rather gently, not the gale-driven slashing rains that tear the leaves from the trees, but just present, penetrating rain. The maples of all kinds are in their glory: brilliant yellows of broad-leaf maple mostly, with the occasional fiery vine maple tucked underneath the canopy. I want to walk in an eastern wood, where every tree is yellow or flame-reds, where there is not a green leaf in sight, as if trees are not green at all ever, as if they are always gold and... Happy Hallows!

My elder daughter got a cool treat last night--it is round and has a diamond stuck to it. She said "Yes!" Sign in to see full entry.

Love took over my Travelblogue... but here, it's Halloween!

Violetta's Venetion Moment The Vampire Buffy Sainte Marie recorded this very spooky song in 1969. Perhaps she wrote it, I couldn't find the author listed specifically. Shall I tell you of the night...? It was long ago... Late November and the snow just about to fall... and the moon was big and bright cold and sharp and clear-- and the air was biting... Softly, swiftly down the road-- never made a sound-- someone came from far away, someone tall and old. As I looked into his eyes no reflection... Sign in to see full entry.

Today I had occasion to look up two of my favorite poems.

One, I just heard for the first time a couple of days ago on PBS, Writer's Almanac. I love hearing Garrison Keillor's voice and style of delivery. Sometimes when I write a poem, I listen to it in my mind coming from him, and it shapes the poem, especially free verse. This one I heard some time ago, and it makes me laugh... The Revenant I am the dog you put to sleep, as you like to call the needle of oblivion, come back to tell you this simple thing: I never liked you--not one bit. When I licked... 'Kristin Lavransdatter' and the historical novel

I've been reading this lately. It's a trilogy written by Sigrid Undset in 1920, an historical novel following a woman's life in medieval Norway. The translation works so hard at maintaining the flavor of the time and place, and the idiom of the culture, that at times it is challenging to read: it is richly convoluted with a kind of twisty syntax that requires some real comprehension acrobatics to make sense of it--almost like reading in a foreign language you know with limited fluency. A while... Sign in to see full entry.

How's the color in Buffalo?

I have a chance to spend 4 days driving under the Northeast autumn... or Southeast, if I cross into Ontario... driving from Buffalo, NY. If it's dreary and rainy, and all the leaves have already fallen, it would be a disappointment... Any idea of what the almanacs are predicting? Sign in to see full entry.

Halloween Carols!

Rising of the Moon The thing I hunt, it lurks in every shadow that ever consumed a human soul: In crevices and pits and fens it hides, and snarls softly-- knows I'm here... I hear it breathing, very near, and I am ready-- must be ready for it --when it rages up and out from pit and fen-- to cast my spear, my spell-- I mean to conquer and compell! Even now, upon the mountains' cutting edge the glowing moon, it sets a-light and limns the highest peaks-- It pales the night, obscures the blessed... Sign in to see full entry.
