The shape of the world

Beliefs and systems of beliefs create the filters through which each of us perceives and interprets the world. They help us find a place of inner balance, a sense that we understand things around us and keep a sense of manageability: a rational sorting-out of what things mean, what they're worth, and how they relate to all the other things in our personal worlds. The choice of Evil

E vil is the disavowal of humanity, punishment of humanity in others. Humans have the choice to be human, and Evil chooses to be not. Choices. Always, choices. What lies behind...?

Behind every great emotion stands another, shyer one. Behind anger, it is usually hurt: betrayal, abandonment, injustice, disappointment. If we are focused on the anger and its complications, it's demands, then we don't have to be so immersed in the the thing that hurt so much we turned to the anesthetizing heat of anger. Ego is not the enemy

I saw a bunch of bumper-stickers and window decals today on the theme of destroying your ego. Several referenced men particularly (Two 1950s looking, smirking women: "Did you see the size of his EGO?") and one of the bunch referenced Zen on the theme of ego destruction. People don't get what 'ego' means, what it is. Ego is your self-image. From a Zen perspective, or the generally Buddhist or Hindu narrative, a self-image is undesireable. I get to wondering...

How does a person lose their connection with humanity? How does someone come to the conclusion that lives are worth less than money? I can understand the kind of aquisitiveness that comes with poverty of all kinds, especially the wherewithal to live in comfort and security, and to give the same to one's children and other dependents. Humanity is Love expanding, Greed is Fear, grasping.

It's more evident than ever, the great divide between those who have the grace of real humanity, and those who simply don't. It has always been part of human nature, and I understand that the reason for it lies in the maturity of the human spirit: some younger and more primitive souls are more attuned to the animal side with all it's fears and compensations. Salute to the Sun

Sunrise... pushes against the lightest misty rain off to the west and a rainbow unfolds, to grace the dawning. Sunlight... a shaft of light strikes across the land illuminating treetops; Balloons rise brilliant against a steel-blue lowering sky. Learning

Children learn from before birth, by experience as we all do, without explanations or clarifications, without fine-tuned interpretations. The beliefs adopted with that learning is the deepest kind. They also learn as they grow from toddler age on up from lessons taught on an emotional vector from parents, also unquestionable, unexplained and absolute: We don't do that! We do this!
