The ELFs are collecting food donations for the local pantry this month. I had some things to donate - cornbread muffin mix, pasta, several things with gluten in them. Canned veggies and fruits, not the bargain brands, either. The deal is, make a donation and get a free book. One of my favorite kids... Sign in to see full entry.

A poem from the '90s
Seen From The Office Window (2) Distant hills pull a veil across their faces, beckoning, flirting. Here, they suggest, are your memories, throw off the shroud of dull daily reality. Dark recesses of my mind hold the memory of sweet woods waiting there. I remember grassy dew kisses on blistered feet,... Sign in to see full entry.

No Forwarding Address
Maybe it's nothing new in the human story, but it can set you back on your heels when you hear about it. Guy goes home to mom and dad's after being away for awhile to find new people living there. No idea where they went. Never met them. Sorry. What the???? Shocked me when I found out my mother- and... Sign in to see full entry.

Escape
Sometimes we don't get it that the jailer is also captive. His keys, his routine, his obligation to bring meals at certain times, to unlock the door for an exercise period, his standing by: all these control his days even as the prisoner's. So it is as children we chafe against parents, the dull... Sign in to see full entry.

Word of the Day: Nunya
Years ago, two years after my baby girl left for college, the crap hit the fan for her, and she dropped out of her 4-year college. All kinds of distractions had come together - her roommate's boyfriend took to spending almost every night in their shared dorm room, which made her uncomfortable. So... Sign in to see full entry.

If at first you don't succeed...
FOGEDABOUDIT... A couple hours ago I typed a bit about the Petraeus yawn. Deleted it 2 minutes ago because even I would not want to comment on the umpteenth stupid scandal to dandle and flip on the media for no good reason. Doing family history in connection with my mother's bio - found jots and... Sign in to see full entry.

The News Hole
When I was a part-time beat reporter / layout and design jock at the Weekly American (not the paper's real name) I made $60 a week and nine gallons of gas. I was also a full-time student that year, a J-Student, with assignments for "god" who was head of the print section of the Mass Communications... Sign in to see full entry.

Morning Report: bits and pieces
It's cold. 82 degrees Saturday, 32 right now with wind chill down to 22. Need a toe cosy. People still wonder what Petraeus was up to, and now the Girlfriend Biographer's sending "back off, bitch" notes to another girl. I smell a movie in the works. Crockpotted a batch of ham hocks and beans - best... Sign in to see full entry.

I ran into a block yesterday...
Same block I've been working around for... well... ever. What about the old man? I sent my little sis an email, asking if she had info about the ship he served on in WWII - and she sent it, which further muddied the waters. Then this a.m. before sunup she sends this email with a web link to get his... Sign in to see full entry.

Feedback and Characterization...
I spent some young years thinking my father was a useless a$$hole, wishing I could find him and kick him in the shins. I wanted an explanation - how could he just disappear and never even wonder whether his kids had a roof over their head or food on the table? How can a man call himself a father who...
