I almost fell in love reading your story about the big bear of a man...Gentle Giant comes to mind. Brave and resourceful...well no wonder you touched my heart, he reminds me of our dear Wiley!!!!

My grandparents came to America when The Czech Republic was still Bohemia. It was always Bohemia to them even after the name was changed to Czechoslovakia. To Grandpa it was fighting words when anyone called him a "Bohunk".

Re: Naut
Maybe you should say "The Canada". It has a resounding ring to it.

Sounds like a great chap! I know a number of people who get annoyed if you mistake their country of origin, and can appreciate how someone from (The) Ukraine would not want to be labelled as a Russian, but glad he was understanding about it
I've just realized that we're nearing the end of the alphabet and am now sad - I've been thoroughly enjoying this journey and don't want it to end!!

Clearly a good man! But he would be upset with you again if he read this - Ukrainians hate it when you say the Ukraine! Many years ago a Ukrainian friend of mine said, quite angrily, "You don't say the Canada, do you? It's simply Ukraine!"

So, I guess he wasn't a ballet dancer...
That must be another Uri I'm thinking of... Yours sounds like a really good man, and I hope he got the girl and the little farm!
