We were down to three yesterday. Peg, a retired speech therapist who brings her laptop, Mary, the retiring leader of our group, and me. After a two-minute intro and sign-in we all got down to brass tacks. Peg chose not to use one of our writing hints and instead composed a heartfelt letter to a... Sign in to see full entry.

Writers Without Borders...
The monthly meeting was scheduled for last night. Couple days ago Chris sent out a reminder. We meet at 5:15-5:30, to give everyone time to get home from work and allow for traffic. I'm almost always the first one there, 5 or 5:15. I buy a decaf latte at the counter, think about the fancy-schmancy... Sign in to see full entry.

Wanda Talks
We had a light crowd for a Tuesday, but when the center's quiet the phone goes nuts. Sara is on vacation, Michelle was running the Center. It was not the usual Tuesday soup and salad menu - there were to be barbecued brats, potato salad, strawberry shortcake - made in-house. Which meant the kitchen... Sign in to see full entry.

Twist
My son Joe has always been a meat and potatoes guy. As a kid he wouldn't touch anything green or leafy, ate a lot of burgers and fried chicken. Grew up to love greasy fast foods, became a pretty good barbecue chef. He didn't see the point of poetry, didn't take any classes in literature that weren't... Sign in to see full entry.

Awake at 4:00 a.m. What the heck's going on?
I could understand it if I were dozing off at 8:00 p.m. But I was up much later than that. But here I am, awake before the birds, fiddling with the remote looking for any program other than infomercials. The Weather Channel usually puts me to sleep again, but any time they feature the Coast Guard... Sign in to see full entry.

Thank You to the Defenders of Freedom -- (or was that Forget You?)
Holidays are set aside for honoring the men and women who have fought, died, and suffered grievous wounds to protect our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Boy Scouts plant flags, there are patriotic speeches at military cemeteries and VFW posts, televised news conferences where... Sign in to see full entry.

TED - In case you haven't listened to TED talks on NPR --
From Google's menu: "TED* is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading - through TED.com, our annual conferences, the annual TED Prize and local TEDx events." Interesting, thought-provoking, creative, fun and sometimes weird, TED is much more interesting than celebrity gossip, ain't it awful... Sign in to see full entry.

Everybody says TGIF...
By Friday those days at work got long - and not just long, but tiresome. It seemed like everyone I came across on Friday had a list of complaints as long as your arm, and attitude out the wazoo. Or maybe it was just me. I remember coffee didn't help. By quitting time I was way past wanting outta... Sign in to see full entry.

That'll learn 'em, durn 'em.
In winter I take pity on the squirrels spend way too much on peanuts raw and in the shell. In gratitude, they stick around all summer digging up their surplus. They don't remember where their stash is and search randomly in my newly potted flowers, uprooting delicate hothouse things not yet rooted.... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday at the Center.
The last few Tuesdays have been slow. So yesterday I took a printout of my mss for "Simon Says." Rather than sit around with my chin in my hand staring at the wall, I'd do some blue pencil corrections. I had problems with getting the chapters in order so they'd make sense to a reader. I've been... Sign in to see full entry.
