It was cold this a.m. when I headed for The Center for my Tuesday shift at the front desk. I’d gone last week, gotten sick at work and left after a few minutes. But today I was feeling much better. The deep chest cold has eased, my bruises from the fall last Monday week are showing the greens and... Sign in to see full entry.

BULLIES - Postscript
Fifty-odd years later, looking back on the situation – I have felt some regret that I did not shoot the individual when I had the chance. He went on to marry again – a marriage that lasted only a few months because he was abusive to her two sons (aged about 4 or 5) by a previous marriage. Her name... Sign in to see full entry.

BULLIES, Cont'd (the married years)
Five years in, knowing full well it had been a bad bargain but without resources, no money, no friends willing to help, no family within a thousand miles, I tried talking to Rev. Vise, the minister of our Methodist congregation. After an hour of baring my soul, I asked what I should do. He told me... Sign in to see full entry.

Little Blast from the Past
Our old friend Dave Cryer is now a professor of writing and frequently posts photos and comments about weekend hikes and jaunts in the highlands. A couple days ago he posted a haiku about the storm-destroyed rock formation on the coast of Malta. Azure Window shuts: Malta's framing moment melts - All... Sign in to see full entry.

Friday
Started to write a sequel to the bullies post, something about my first marriage and how it ended, but two things stopped me. The first is the crazy fly-away cursor that zaps my typing, the second was re-visiting the old situation. It's been over 50 years and I still don't want to get into the hairy... BULLIES - Part 3
It was a huge snow, two and a half feet deep even at our relatively low elevation. Schools throughout the region were closed as road crews struggled to clear the dangerous mountain roads, the drifting across open highways. Nobody was going anywhere, which made it a perfect day for us to set up a... Sign in to see full entry.

UPDATE
After I posted Bullies Part 2, went to run some errands, took a fall and banged up my elbow, knee and went to ER to get checked out. Was there from 11:15 to after 4:00, got a tetanus shot, a bandaid on my skinned elbow, and was 90% of the time left on my own in an open cubicle, nothing to eat or... Sign in to see full entry.

BULLIES - Part 2
Our house was on a graveled street that became country road at the outer corner of our lot. It was the last house at the edge of town. Across the road were forests that went on as far as the eye could see, through the valley and foothills, to the eastern horizon. The intersection of our unnamed... Sign in to see full entry.

BULLIES
When I was in 6th grade something happened. Our little family moved from our home in rural Kennewick, WA to the backwoods village of Salkum, 250 miles away and on the other side of the Cascade range from whatever trouble had come down on Mama’s head. (story for another time) There was no advance... Sign in to see full entry.

HYPOCHONDRIA
Mama had a cigarette cough. She’d hack up "half a lung" while building the morning cooking fire. Only after the coffee perked and she had that first cigarette did it settle down. But she never gave up the “coffin nails,” not until she was 68 years old and some doctor told her she had a choice: she... Sign in to see full entry.
