Longer ago than I care to admit, I was the assistant manager of the university’s housing office. The staff included a civil service clerk and four part-time student workers. We were in charge of the waiting list and assigning students to apartments. Far more students wanted to be housed at the Tower... Sign in to see full entry.

TELL ME A STORY
Yesterday was miserable, weary, foggy and dark. By foggy I mean brain fog. Not exactly a headache, and my vision was a bit blurred. There was no way in hell I was plugging in my hearing aids. Couldn’t come up with a topic for the writers group. Didn’t want to comb my face or wash my hair. All I... Sign in to see full entry.

THE CHECK’S IN THE MAIL, ETC.
Yesterday I received a letter from a friend that included a generous check. I’d sent a couple of hats and a scarf from inventory, happy to clear the shelf-space. The check would be at least ten times the value of the items, even if I had asked for payment – so I’ll be sending it back with thanks.... Sign in to see full entry.

LET’S PRETEND
I know you kids don’t remember a radio program entitled “Let’s Pretend” that was broadcast from 1934-1954. It was a Saturday morning must-listen, with cartoon-style sound effects, kids playing the roles of storybook characters. There was a “regular” on the show, Froggie the Gremlin, who had a magic... Decisions, Decisions
Sometimes I get the urge to draw money out of the bank, gas up the car and hit the open road. With no cell phone (well, I’ve got one of the hellish things, but seldom turn it on) there’s no way anyone would know where I was. With no particular destination in mind, there’d be no stress about getting... Sign in to see full entry.

NOTHING LIKE A GOOD BOOK
Next time I go out to eat with certain people who bring along their cell phones and twiddle with them while we are at the table and involved in conversation, I’m going to pull out a book and start reading. I used to take a book along anywhere I went. A book served as a hedge against boredom in... Sign in to see full entry.

Too bad there's not a sharpener
for people, like there is for pencils, to keep us from becoming pointless. At a family restaurant you see them, each on their own devices, texting someone not there about something not as important as the here and now (or the who, now). When the one who sits patiently waiting to be part of a... Sign in to see full entry.

FASHIONISTAS: WHADDA THEY KNOW?
As you may remember I’ve been doing a bit of crocheting for some time now. Long enough to have gotten good at beanies. Striped ones, solid ones, bright, dark, some that slouch. They fit close, could be worn under a hoodie for extra warmth, or the ones in school colors would be great to wear on those... Sign in to see full entry.

HAPPY CANADA DAY
On NPR I heard an interview with Mike Myers, famous Canadian who’s written a book entitled “Canada.” ‘Yeah, Baby!” The interview covered the point that Canada has become the locus of what used to be the American Dream – where immigrants could come to live decent, safe lives and their children could... The Serpent's Tooth Business
I had a gut-level post written in Word to post here this morning, but after giving it a good look-see, have decided not to share it. You may surmise it's mother-child related, and is tied to a kid's ingratitude. And then some. My youngest (he'll be 46 in Dec.) has turned into someone I don't... Sign in to see full entry.
