Contemplating the navel.

My belly button's not the same. "Bernie" was an innie throughout childhood, an outie during the later months of pregnancies, but once I got my less bulky belly back post-partum, Bernie became innie againie. She's been with me through thick and thin. In an attempt to feign modesty, I mostly kept her... Sign in to see full entry.

I'll mow your lawn. Don't worry about it.

I fired the outfit that did my yard work last year. Dispute over the fallen leaves. Not really a dispute: they didn't clean 'em up, I thought that was part of the deal. So when the guy sent me the contract for the new year, I said no, because... They didn't offer to get the leaves, say they're sorry... Sign in to see full entry.

April is Poetry Month, part 3

April The frogs return and sing again, it is the time of love no matter that the snow was here a week ago or that storms are on their way. They float mesmerized, conjoined, spinning life out of the moment, never imagining forever after or a palace fit for a queen. A princess could do worse than kiss... Sign in to see full entry.

April is Poetry Month

One of my favorite American poets, along with Maya Angelou, is the amazing Mary Oliver. She writes the essence of wonder. Her poems are celebrations of life, they bring us to focus on the wonder of the ordinary. Ms. Oliver has won a Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. She teaches, she has... It's Poetry Month.

RAINBOW Color me, color me, color me brown. I’m tired of the whitebred look, tired of being mistaken for one insulated by tradition and majority from ordinary penalties. I am not that narrow. Yes, color me brown. Color me, color me, color me blue as the fragile ocean, as the weary sky, make me an... Sign in to see full entry.

Deadly Dentistry

This may explain why I am a bit fatalistic about my upcoming dental work. In January of 1976 my brother-in-law, who had been in and out of a state mental facility for much of his adult life, died after the extraction of an abscessed tooth. To be fair, our situations are hardly parallel. I'm pushing... Sign in to see full entry.

Writer's Journal...

This is my third start on today's blog. The first was a brief paragraph about Eliza Bright, the woman who was most likely my father's sixth wife. I've written bits here about my journeys through Ancestry.com and family histories, etc. and the novelized version of my mother's biography. Since it was... Sign in to see full entry.

Rehash of a rehash...

I'm a fan of "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart. Sometimes he's not as funny as he thinks he is (I deal with that condition myself) - but sometimes I think he's brilliant. Last night he took CNN to task. I'll be looking at the rerun on Comedy Central this morning to make sure I got it all. Sometimes... Sign in to see full entry.

They caught the soup guy...

Well, he saw himself on TV and turned himself in, represented by counsel. Turned out he was a 61-year-old who admitted being in the store but denied putting anything in the soup, video of him in the act not withstanding. Delusional? Cops are not saying what he added to the recipe - perhaps the info... Sign in to see full entry.

I think I've caught my granddaughter's virus...

Sore throat, watery eyes, all the energy of a two by four. No appetite, coffee doesn't taste good, weird headache that strikes like a hammer and fades. I think I'll just crawl back in bed and listen to the TV with my head under the covers. No updates on the soup Nazi - the guy who spiked the soup at... Sign in to see full entry.
