Subbed at the Community Center yesterday. Wednesdays are very different from my usual Tuesday gig. For one thing, they have a Bridge game going in the activity room, a kind of round-robin thing, four or five tables. They are focused on the game, not a lot of chit-chat. Or if there's chit-chat, it's... Sign in to see full entry.

Promises, promises...
A week or so ago I told my daughter what I wanted for my birthday. "Thank God! It was driving me nuts that you wouldn't even give me a hint." I said I'd been wanting one of those built-in custom closet/storage units they sell at Lowes and Home Depot - a California Closets or Martha Stewart kind of... Sign in to see full entry.

Buzzy's 80th Birthday...
We've got a guy named Buzz, a pool player who comes to the Main Street Center every once in a while. Two or three other former pool-hall loungers show up, and you can hear the crack of the balls and sometimes a shout of surprise when somebody makes a great shot -- or misses one that should a been... Well, that's a fine kettle of fish...
The threatened shutdown has now become the unbelievable but true condition of our government. The situation kept me up late last night. Right up until the time ran out, I had hope they'd come to their senses and do their job. Silly me. Jon Stewart pointed out the obvious, it's not an act; Affordable... Sign in to see full entry.

Kirk and Spock...
My eighteen-year-old granddaughter has a new boyfriend. New to me. I think she's known him for some time. He lives in Los Angeles and comes to the St. Louis area from time to time to visit family and friends, and this tall, dark and charming guy is a cousin to one of Amy's best friends. She... Walnut Season: Quarterback Sneak
It's high season for sports in this area - the Cardinals Baseball team made it to the division championship again; the Rams football schedule has started, and since they share a stadium this has kept the grounds crew hopping. If we had a lot of rain they'd have to tear up football sod and configure... Sign in to see full entry.

"The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak
I am starting now to read this book, a grim reaper's view apparently of life in WWII Germany and the story of a little girl named Liesel whose younger brother died on the train from their home to another town where their mother was taking them to a foster home. It was at her little brother's grave... Sign in to see full entry.

Maybe there'll be a NaNoWriMo after all...
Yesterday afternoon I got a weird kind of hitch in my right leg - a catch, like there was a kinked muscle that twinged each time I took a step. I used to get those kinds of ambulatory catches when I was pregnant years and years and years ago, something to do with the pressure on the big veins /... Sign in to see full entry.
Late Start today - weird internet issues again.
Our Writers Without Borders group met at BAM, and focus of last night's meeting was Chris's short story, one of several that will be part of her Master's in Writing thesis. The assignment was to take a story by a different writer and create a new one, following the original plot but with different... Sign in to see full entry.
