Yesterday's calendar: Blogit at 5:30 a.m. - 10 a.m. "Write Your Own Story" session at the Center - subbing for Mary, 5:30 p.m., Writers Without Borders at Books-a-Million. I went to the Center half an hour early to get the sign-in sheet and other things ready. A local historian was giving a talk in... Sign in to see full entry.

The Squirreled Series...
For the past month I've gone inning after inning with a local team of squirrels. The "pennant" in this contest is the walnut crop, dropping randomly onto my back patio from the neighbor's tree. It was cute and fun at first, to watch them grab a walnut hull and scurry to a fence post or the porch... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday: At the Center
Chilly wind, spitting rain, the kind of day you'd rather prop your feet up in front of the fire with a good book. My day at the Center. Shower, dry hair, put on face, get dressed. Make & drink Nutri-Blast shake, check Blogit one last time, get winter coat out of the back of the closet, start the... Sign in to see full entry.

Baby Sister's Birthday Month: October
I love October. For one thing it's my baby sister's birth month. She turns 75 this year, and it always surprises me how many calendar pages have turned since we were rival siblings. She was smarter in school, more charming and diplomatic, always had a lot of friends. She was in the thick of things,... Sign in to see full entry.

Nothing I've done this morning
seems uplifting or funny. It's dark, and the moon's shrouded in clouds. Yesterday at five a.m. its reflected light made the face of my garage and the back patio almost as bright as day. I was feeling a bit dicey, thinking of calling my son and saying I couldn't make it to his granddaughter's seventh... Sign in to see full entry.

Play Ball!
One little thing I do at the Main Street Center is schedule rides for people on our van. We pick 'em up, take 'em to their doctor or grocery store or bring 'em in for a bingo game, and then we take 'em home again. It's like a taxi you schedule in advance. Some of our regulars use the van a couple... Sign in to see full entry.

Simon Says, part 1
“Where are we?” the kid asked as he sat up and threw off the rough wool blanket. He was suddenly cold, suddenly felt the need to piss. “We’re ‘bout as far as ye can get f’um ennywhere,” the old guy said, tipping the rolled brim of his battered Stetson back so he could look toward the sunrise. There... Sign in to see full entry.
Mable, Mable, Bright and Able...
Get your elbows off the table. It was part of our house training, that little verse. Table manners used to be important in the days when folks gathered at the table for meals, and conversation about everything fit for print was shared. This was how kids learned who their relatives were and how they... Sign in to see full entry.

Talking to myself while checking FB
Coffee hasn't kicked it. Still fuzzy minded. Scrolling down. OMG and WTH? Post from 2 days ago 18-yr-old Granddaughter in try-on Halloween costume, Ariel. All innocent kid again instead of salesgirl-sophisticate, sweet little smile, the long, waist-long red hair (and without extensions). Click Like.... Sign in to see full entry.

The Waltons Don't Live Here Any More
In the sixties when "The Waltons" became a weekly feature, Fang and I watched with the kids. I'm sure I made negative comments, at the very least I watched with my lip curled in sarcastic disbelief. Nobody really acts that way. No brothers and sisters back up each other's game in helpful ways, moms... Sign in to see full entry.
