It was in the 60s, we had a lot of really cold (zero and minus) nights that winter. Leclaire lake froze over, 6” of solid ice and the green light at the pavilion was on. The park dept. looked out for our safety and kept the light red until it was safe to skate. We haven’t had a frozen over lake in... Sign in to see full entry.

Cooking Lesson - and a warning
I saw an article on my Microsoft News Feed - 30 foods you shouldn't cook in your crockpot. One of them is chicken breasts (or roast chicken). I have been cooking chicken breasts with a commercial French onion soup mix for flavor - in spite of the fact it comes out tough - perfect for pulled chicken,... Sign in to see full entry.

HAPPY SADIE HAWKINS DAY!
EMAIL FROM ROSALEE My sis emails me from her idyll in Oregon from time to time. She’s the classy one, thoughtful, gracious, and sharply funny. I miss our high school days when we conducted a sometimes uncivilized sibling rivalry, complete with cross accusations that “mom likes you best.” We were... Sign in to see full entry.

WRITE YOUR STORY GROUP @ THE CENTER
Only three of us showed up on Thursday for the writing session. Ebbie, JoAnn and me. (or should that be I?) I brought along the list of writing prompts from a few days ago. We discussed the idea of making a game of it – of ‘flash’ cards with prompts on them, or picking a number between one and forty... Sign in to see full entry.

HORRIBLE IRONIC JOKE
There I was, sitting on the curb all dejected and blue, when a friend came along and said to me, "Cheer up. Things could be worse." So I cheered up. And sure enough, things got worse. Sign in to see full entry.

FOLLOWING A LEAD
Thank you Sea_Gypsy for the suggestion about Googling the words “writing prompts.” I followed one lead to get a list of 60 of them, most of which would work for the Write Your Own Story group. Now to supplement the list using the index of one of my writerly books, and get the labels typed up. Also... Sign in to see full entry.

IDEAS FOR GENERATING STORIES
I’m not a wheel-watcher, but have seen “Wheel of Fortune” a number of times. For a couple days I’ve been dallying with the idea of a wheel spinner on which are printed random topics to be used as starters for The Center’s Write Your Story group. Started out with the idea that each slot would contain... Sign in to see full entry.

REMEMBERING BECKY
Today is the "life celebration" for my granddaughter Becky, who passed away on January 5th. She was the sparkle in the family party, beloved by the camera and anyone who needed a friend. But she didn't see her own beauty, struggled with doubt and alcohol. Her mother and my son had been divorced for... Sign in to see full entry.

1952 MEMORY LANE
You may not be old enough to remember when the greatest generation came back from the war and joined the workforce - when most people got their music over the radio. In the ‘50s, we tuned in to the Saturday night broadcasts of “Your Hit Parade” of the nation’s top ten songs. That’s where Perry... Sign in to see full entry.
