I absolutely loved reading about your first date. It sounds so dreamy and apropos for the time. Well, for any time. Thank you. My first date... Hmm? Did I have one? Perhaps. I was 15 1/2 and a boy with a great face and a super-hot, red convertible had asked me out. I didn't realize then that his family was really rich on top of that. My dad didn't want me to date until I was 16 but I pestered, so he and mother agreed on the condition that they "meet" the boy first. In other words, interrogate him. He was a Jehovah W., unbeknownst to me. We were Roman Catholics. He started talking religion. Disaster. My parents let me go out with him but he wasn't that interested in me after a few dates. He started dating the girl next door. I had to watch him and his car go there every day and see the two of them take off for fun times at Ridgemont High. Yep!

I love these posts! I do remember my first date. His name was Ricky and he lived a few blocks from me. I was 14 years old and Ricky was 20. He asked me if I would like to go to the car races with him. My mother gave her permission and it was a Sunday afternoon. It started a long time love affair. Not the way it sounds though. It was my first time at the car races and I thought it was the best thing ever. We got to go to the pits where you could see the car owners working on the cars. They had pit crews and I was mesmerized. That's the best word I can think of to describe how I felt that day. We walked all around and went to the pits in the back of the race tracks. They get pretty dusty. By the time I went home I think I had dust in my hair and clothes but I loved it. We sat on the bleachers for a while and that's the first time I saw a dragster. To this day I think I favor them but I love all race cars. Ricky and I ended up dating for over three years and spent a lot of time at the race track. It never worked out though because he was a devout catholic and I was a protestant and he just couldn't handle it in the end. His Mom wasn't crazy about the age difference and at one point she called my mother and yelled at her but my Mom yelled right back. It just would have never worked. But it's funny because he found a Catholic girl and married her but my friend saw him in a store one day and he asked my friend to tell me that he still loved me. I kind of felt sorry for his wife because she was at home and he was saying this to my friend. That has always bothered me. I ended up marrying someone that loved the races just as much as I did. He put together a 65 GTO and raced it. My favorite car of all time. It was older when we got it but I loved it. It was red and boy did it move. What a life I've had. Now I watch the races on cable. I still love them.

Besides freezing for half the night, it sounded like you had fun.
Your date went well considering his age. A lesser gentleman may have tried for more. I was asked out on my first date one night at the skating rink after the skating was done and the dancing took over. He was a known "goat roper" as we referred to the cowboys back then. He was tall, good looking, and popular. I was 16 & he was 17. I hadn't yet been given permission to date, and I remember shaking in my shoes. I was barely allowed to wear makeup, let alone go out with a boy. I told him no, that I wasn't allowed to date, but he insisted that I at least ask my parents. I gave him my number despite my better judgment. The next day during dinner, I asked my parents. They said that they would discuss it. Jerry, the goat roper called that night. I walked down the hall, out of earshot on our landline with the 50-foot cord to tell him that I still didn't have an answer. By the time I walked back to the kitchen, my parents met me near the dining room where they both shook their heads in unison for a yes. The goat roper picked me up a week later on a Saturday night. I was introduced to my first party, complete with beer, loud music, and a rowdy bunch of kids. Once again, I shook in my shoes. He and I dated for six months before he moved on to a more mature high school junior.
