Remarkable! It isn’t often that I go on about the weather, but I just have to make an exception! Yesterday, February 3, 2016, I saw 13.8 C (that’s 56.84 F) on my thermometer, and that’s in the shade, of course… Yes - records were shattered all over southern Ontario! '"I actually wouldn't be... At Sea – again…XXI
Many of these birds would circle us as long as our lights were on, sometimes for hours; and occasionally, totally exhausted, they would settle on the ship… Eventually the bells rang, the jiggers began to turn, I stowed the camera in my bunk and I went to work, collecting squid, dissecting and... At Sea – again…XX
But autumn did give us a new experience... I remember the first night it happened; I had been having my ‘breakfast’ and was thinking of going back to my bunk for some reading, since the bell hadn’t rung, and there was nothing for me to do. But I decided to go out on deck first to have a look... But... Sign in to see full entry.

At Sea – again…XIX
One thing I know, and strange as it may seem – I was not in the least afraid or even concerned! Thinking back and trying to capture at least an echo of my thoughts and feelings at the time, I can best describe it as a kind of excitement, an almost visceral openness to the entirety of the sights and... At Sea – again XVIII
He turns to his console, punches a few buttons and some figures appear on the screen. It looks like they can calculate just about anything with their equipment...He points to one of a jumble of figures, and I will always remember the one he pointed at, at least the part before the decimal point,... The helmsman has to think about his ship, and he has to know her intimately; he has to be like a friend to her, or even a lover; he has to use a light touch, has to feel her through his fingertips and the soles of his feet, absorb her moves and vibrations, ‘talk’ to her through the wheel, make her... At Sea – again…XVI
As summer slipped into autumn, the shorter days came with harshness in the air. It had been remarkably calm and pleasant throughout July and August, when there was only the occasional brief stretch stronger winds and intermittent rain. But that was about to change... Squid probably don’t know about... Sign in to see full entry.

At Sea – again…XV
The radio operator was almost constantly in touch with other Japanese vessels in the area, and what most impressed me was the way he conducted two conversations simultaneously! While he was speaking to one of his counterparts, he was communicating by Morse code with another one! We talked about... Sign in to see full entry.

At Sea – again…XIV
To me it was a nice illustration of the fact that certain skills do not that easily translate even if only a few of the parameters are changed. I couldn’t handle their shogi ‘airborne’ attacks, and they couldn’t beat me at chess without them... As I pointed out the first time, that I beat these men... Sign in to see full entry.

At Sea – again…XIII
One day, when I happened to be on deck with my camera, something that no longer occurred too often, I met the fishmaster and, on the spur of the moment, asked him if I could take his picture. He didn’t smile, but said ‘ hai ’... But then, at the very last split second, he sort of turned away... Oh,... Sign in to see full entry.
