Nautikos

It's funny how so many things are "mind over matter"...my mom always loved oysters but was totally finicky about the stomachs and would never, ever eat a raw one.  When I was young, she would treat herself by buying a pint at the grocery in Houston, frying them......it took the whole pint to feed just her because by the time she cut away the stomach, there was only a single bite left on each oyster in the pint!  I'll never forget when I decided her way was nonsense and started chewing up the whole thing, stomach and all!  She watched me in horror....and no small amount of envy.

Naut

This makes me think as a child I ate anything my daddy ate. I ate raw oysters until I was 50 or so and I woke up and decided I would not do that again. I don't think I could do the squid either. good writing.

Meal time sounds like it was a very interesting, not only because of the food, but also because one could be called into duty in the middle of a meal.

I think such food would keep me from making that trip if I knew ahead of time.

The squid would be delicious...but I do know that after dissecting a kidney and learning each little section and it's importance in body cleansing and good health, I have never been able to face kidney since.

It all sounds very challenging for a Westerner. In other words, "Eeeuuooo!" I'm gonna get all girlie here, but a vat of rice into which a bunch of guys just plow their hands to help themselves as they walk on by, well, when in Rome, though I doubt Romans would have eaten quite in that manner. At least no one got sick, right? Perhaps the fermented squid "soup" toughened everyone up for the side of rice. Now the daikon, that could have been good, even pickled. I put radishes in with my veggies when I make a pot roast!  Daikon and carrot miso soup sounds good. Sashimi, well, in a pinch, but hold the wasabi!

Goodness Naut, I don't think I could have joined in that repast . I suppose one would eat if starving, it is the squid making those squeaky noises that would be on my mind. I suppose I could have a ball of rice.
