This Monday has started chilly and grey, with occasional drizzle. Forecast says it won't reach 70F today. But for me, 68 is great! It will be an excellent day for doing outside stuff, like tending to the garden. One of the garden boxes has begun to lose its floor. The spinach sort of growing in it is no great loss, but I will rescue the bright blooming marigolds before we transfer the soil to a couple of the big bins, and then turn it over to make repairs. I think it only needs more and longer... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday morning coming on
Good Sunday morning! I think I know why the magpies are yapping at all the neighborhood cats. I heard one going off at the big orange tom that visits sometimes. As the bird yapped, the cat calmly went over the fence, out of the yard and to wherever he goes next. And I could hear more yappings, but they were unpracticed voices: I think the magpies have a nest nearby! I spent some time in the early sun, poking around at plants and garden. I pulled the hail protection off the zucchini/yellow squash... Sign in to see full entry.

Yap, Yap, Yap!
This morning, again, the magpies woke me up. They've been yapping at a particular young cat who lounges on the cement path in front of the apartments next door. One gets right in her face and yaps away until she goes somewhere else. This morning, I don't know who they were scolding, but it was in front of my deck, and in the blue spruce in front. I know the young doves roost there, and many little birds. I went out on the deck and clapped at them. Apparently they didn't like that sound, and they... Sign in to see full entry.

Here comes the heat...
Just after 9, and the day that began at 6:30 and 58F is now nearly 80 at not quite 9:30. We're warned that it will get quite near 100 this afternoon. All the front deck garden has been watered and a few plants shuffled about. The back looks quite damp so I suspect Charlie turned on the sprinkler last night. The dish washer is quietly churning, there's a fan running on high on the deck, but only a whisper at this distance as I sit in the living room facing the open door. The tv is on, with an old... My Tuesday is like a Monday
Hot day, and sleepy... Could it be because I was up early enough to catch my grandperson's graduation from high school, online? Or I just didn't sleep well enough last night. I was up early enough to plant a batch of cauliflower starts before the sun came over the trees. We have the sprinkler working now, so I don't need to keep them handy to the kitchen and watering. They will need the watering for sure, this hot week! The weekend with my high school friend was good, with lots of eating... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday morning coolth
Thanks for all the well-wishings for Charlie's day at the toy show--He did very well for a one-day event, and sent six more of his Wasteland Bears home! My friend and I had some good time together, and she will head home to the mountains in a while where it will be not quite as hot as it's about to be down here on the edge of the Flatlands. This next week is going to be HOT! We may hit 100 F before seeing the cooling rains predicted for the end of the week. Denver is even more likely to get... Sign in to see full entry.

Toy Show Day
Charlie is now set up out at the Toy Show location, a huge, huge room with vendors around the wal, virtually nothing in the center. And of all of them, he and his friend Rob, who invents tabletop games, a gal nearby who makes clothing, and an artist at the next table are so far the only ones not selling manufactured stuff. If, as sometimes happens, any toy company scouts come to the show, Charlie's will be the booth they go to. But I will be surprised if this show attracts that kind of... Sign in to see full entry.

Barbecue Day
It's Thursday, so BBQ Day around here! Weather permitting, this is, I'm told, going to be a weekly event in Charlie's back yard. I found some little bacon-wrapped filet mignon at the store this week, on extreme sale, so that's my contribution. Also, today the guys next door will be maneuvering the round table off my deck to create a more friendly space beside the bbq grill, and some chairs will be pulled out of the garage to provide seating there. It will be nice to have more available room in... Sign in to see full entry.

Getting the shot is getting freedom
I had a nice chat yesterday with a woman who is probably ~60 who has not yet had the vaccination. She has had bad experiences with needles and vaccines. She doesn't have a political agenda, just a very strong reluctance. Most of our conversation was about travel to far off places, and I think the thing that began to nudge her closer to that needle was the realization that you can't go anywhere in the world these days without proof of vaccination. I hope she gets it, and gets to fly off to all... Sign in to see full entry.

Empty Nest Syndrome
Now that the young doves have fledged and flown, the parents are busy preparing to re-fill the nest for the third time this season. They are bringing tiny twigs and working them into the top layer which is now at least 8 inches taller than when we first set this nesting place up in the corner of the deck ceiling. Imagine laying down a new carpet every time the old one got dirty--but laying on top of the old one! Gradually, the ceiling would come closer and closer... By next year, I am thinking...
