After a good sleep, it's a lovely morning! Sun's shining on a day of clear, fresh-washed air after a night of distant thunderstorms and some local rain. The temps will reach mid-70s today, they promise, and there are likely to be scattered thunderstorms again later. It's BBQ Day here, and may yet happen, despite the forecast, as they may be scattered over other parts of the Springs. I've got a foursome of pretty well-started banana pepper plants to go into the garden this morning. If they are a... Sign in to see full entry.

We Ladies of a Certain Age...
Pat's post today reminded me of this piece I wrote while on one of my cross-country road trips. I'd had a night car-camping, not very comfortable, and stopped soon after waking for breakfast at this place in a little one-cafe town. Pioneer Cafe, Montana Morning Ladies of a Certain Age girls no more except in the heart: What Life has given you have taken despite the dreams you had, despite intentions and resistance; Age acquiring resilience for survival's sake when life is hard or dull beyond... Garden Tuesday
The trip to see my sister was very satisfying! We were about the first OutWorlders to visit the place since it has just re-opened to visitors, and she introduced us to everyone as she showed us around the place. The dining room has also just re-opened for lunch, and there was a bit of an air of celebration. They have much to celebrate: During the lock-down days, over the past 18 months, the whole place had only 3 cases of covid, all staff. Her apartment is very like the house in Estes Park, with... Cool Saturday
While the Pacific NW gets set for temps above 100F, Colorado's Front Range is having a positively chilly weekend. The high today is expected in the mid-60s, and overnight dipped to 54. I actually closed all the windows and the glass doors which were open all night, and turned on the heat this morning! Light rains and thunderstorms are forecast throughout the day. The garden is loving it! In a little while we'll be driving north to Boulder to hang out with my elder sister. It's the first time... Sign in to see full entry.

Heat wave breaks in the Springs!
It was hard to get to sleep last night, even with the fan blowing in the night-cooling air. But today the temps won't be nearly as hot, and the rest of the 10-day forecast promises highs in the 60s! Thunderstorms are promised later today and tomorrow, just rain on Sunday and Monday, then more of both during the week. Excellent! Saturday we have plans to drive up to Boulder where my sister lives now. It will be the first time I've seen her or her new digs since she left Estes Park just before the... Tuesday evening
Today, while Charlie and I drove up to Aurora, CO, to pick up a free couch to replace his old broken down one, some people showed up and replaced the broken down sidewalk in front of our house. I expect they were sent by the city. We don't have the kind of remedial hooligans they have in New Zealand who remove small dead trees from neighborhood gardens in the middle of the night. Yes, my daughter saw that happening one night as she came home from doing something somewhere. These delinquents also... Sign in to see full entry.

Monday again?!
This Monday has started chilly and grey, with occasional drizzle. Forecast says it won't reach 70F today. But for me, 68 is great! It will be an excellent day for doing outside stuff, like tending to the garden. One of the garden boxes has begun to lose its floor. The spinach sort of growing in it is no great loss, but I will rescue the bright blooming marigolds before we transfer the soil to a couple of the big bins, and then turn it over to make repairs. I think it only needs more and longer... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday morning coming on
Good Sunday morning! I think I know why the magpies are yapping at all the neighborhood cats. I heard one going off at the big orange tom that visits sometimes. As the bird yapped, the cat calmly went over the fence, out of the yard and to wherever he goes next. And I could hear more yappings, but they were unpracticed voices: I think the magpies have a nest nearby! I spent some time in the early sun, poking around at plants and garden. I pulled the hail protection off the zucchini/yellow squash... Sign in to see full entry.

Yap, Yap, Yap!
This morning, again, the magpies woke me up. They've been yapping at a particular young cat who lounges on the cement path in front of the apartments next door. One gets right in her face and yaps away until she goes somewhere else. This morning, I don't know who they were scolding, but it was in front of my deck, and in the blue spruce in front. I know the young doves roost there, and many little birds. I went out on the deck and clapped at them. Apparently they didn't like that sound, and they... Sign in to see full entry.

Here comes the heat...
Just after 9, and the day that began at 6:30 and 58F is now nearly 80 at not quite 9:30. We're warned that it will get quite near 100 this afternoon. All the front deck garden has been watered and a few plants shuffled about. The back looks quite damp so I suspect Charlie turned on the sprinkler last night. The dish washer is quietly churning, there's a fan running on high on the deck, but only a whisper at this distance as I sit in the living room facing the open door. The tv is on, with an old...
