The Day Before The Day

Grey skies, cool temps, and a possibility of snow... That's today's weather forecast. My high school pal is driving down from the mountains to stay over a couple of nights, to share our Thanksgiving. I expect she will be here early this afternoon. I've cleared a lot of excess and ancient stuff out of the fridge, and cleaned the glass surfaces. Artichokes have gone into the oven, four big ones cut into halves, so eight ready for tomorrow when they come out. I found really huge ones, and organic... Sign in to see full entry.

Caturdays

This morning the Big Orange Cat came visiting. He came into the house, looking for some rubs and some welcome. Of course, he got both, and while he didn't go for the available cat food, he did have a long drink of water. He went out, mewed some, came in again... Yesterday, I heard a bit of very quiet thunder as the grey stripy cat fled from downstairs and out the back door. This one is very shy, and I'm not sure its a stray, just a cat allowed out. Sometimes when the glass door is shut, I see... Sign in to see full entry.

Costumes and considering new possibilities

The costume hunt went well today, my theatrical friend finding a pretty good amount of what he needs for this upcoming middle-school production. The kids themselves have a lot of input in what they want, but in the end, everyone is limited by what's available. It was the first time in quite a while that I've spent time among the collection. There were many things I had forgotten I had! And now, suddenly, I am thinking again of shifting the collection to a proper shop setting, one large enough to... Sign in to see full entry.

Bright and busy Sunday!

The sunlight, sun still itself below my eastern horizon, is just now setting Pike's Peak alight! Rosey-gold, it illuminates the fresh snowfall all the way down to tree-line. I haven't seen this in quite a while, from the comfy chair, as the curtains have been closed against the heat in summer and the cold in winter. Also, tucked up behind the couch, they don't easily slide to the side. Today, though, they are just enough apart for the morning mountain to shine through! https://flic.kr/ps/rhS1C... Getting shot in the arm

Today was the doctor visit I postponed last month. Glad to have it over and done. It wasn't worth the anxiety I had over it, but that's what I do: She calls it 'generalized anxiety' that I get this way over so many little things, especially that involve authority, performance, the possibility of condemnation or scolding. For me, all anxious, not so much the idea of possibility as probability. It never turns out to be justified. Got my covid booster today, too. I had the Johnson & Johnson last... Awesome!

If I had not gone to see that show, I'd have always felt I missed out, imagining it to be so much more magical and lovely than it actually was. So, I'm glad I went, and congratulate the kids who danced and acted with grace and poise. On the whole, though, it lacked the magic of the book, and leaned awfully heavily on the underlying Christian message throughout. It didn't have to. All in all, it was not awesome. Yesterday we went out to see the new DUNE, another great story of the coming of a... Sign in to see full entry.

Saturday of the birds

I heard the dove again last night, and this morning, that mini-jackhammer sound of the Northern Flickers for the first time in several years. Twice, high up, ducks were calling as they flew over. Those flickers, birds of the woodpecker family, used to try each spring to drill a hole in the wall of this place. If they'd succeeded, they'd have been nesting in my closet. I tried various discouragements, but finally it was the suggestion to the landlord that he tack some chicken wire onto the siding... Sign in to see full entry.

Life goes on...

This afternoon we picked up the ashes of Embers, some flowers and a little leyland cypress tree, about 2 feet tall. Charlie prepared one of the big garden tubs, putting drainage holes in the bottom, and some soil. I put the flowers, cut off their stems, in a hollow in the soil, and we put the ashes over them, then more flowers over the top. More soil... then, the little cypress. Now, looking out across the yard, I will see that little tree growing and remember Embers and her glowing eyes. Sign in to see full entry.

crochet continues...

Here are photos of the little humming-bird cozies (Thanks, Pat!) as requested. https://flic.kr/ps/rhS1C They are a good size to hold a couple of Lindor truffles each, or a mini candy bar. Some are big enough to hold something like a jewelry box. Today I am making some littler ones to each group, too. At least one is long and thin, to hold some candy canes perhaps. I am aiming for a dozen total of various sizes, in each batch. Sign in to see full entry.

Sort of busy Wednesday

Continuing to feed the illusion that I actually do a lot of work, today I am writing about cleaning up--again!--after the nocturnal visits of the mousies. The kitchen, and therefore the house and my hands and all smell of clorox. I've ordered one of those hinged devices that sits on top of a 5 gallon bucket and lures the mice in with tasty aromas, then dumps them in the bucket. I have little heart for slaying them, even with snap traps that usually but don't always kill quickly and cleanly. If... Sign in to see full entry.
