Dvergr... It's a word that speaks of one who lives in the shadows, on the fringes of society, always there, seldom seen. I have always lived on the verge of convention, even on the edges of non-conformity. It has been a choice, a value picked up in childhood but not truly embraced until recently. That choice, like all choices, comes with costs. It comes with consequences. Any part of me that values membership in a coterie of friends, has felt the apartness, the uncertainty of being wanted or... Sign in to see full entry.

A Pretty Good Friday
Cold and colder today, and once again snow is in the air... and on the back porch and on the street and the truck and the cats of the community, a couple of inches deep. Didn't see this one coming, but I'm ready for it. We went out grocery foraging in the early afternoon, and saw the first flakes as we returned to the truck. All the trees are etched and the darkness of the night is seriously compromised. Yesterday a couple of checks arrived and Charlie deposited them for me by phone. But he... Sign in to see full entry.

a more than usually interesting morning
I woke up after 7 today, and was still waking when the doorbell rang at 8:30. I went and put my pants on... At the door was the guy my landlord sent to service the heater downstair, and he also had to take a look and many notes on the water heater upstairs, to give my landlord an estimate for its replacement. I'd mentioned to him a couple of weeks ago that I didn't seem to be getting as much hot water as I once had. The water heater is in the kitchen behind a shelf which was not impossible to... Looking for The Rose
This morning when I woke up, I considered the book beside me on the pillow where I set it down last night. It's a big book, THE NAME OF THE ROSE (by Umberto Eco) and a very complicated one. It takes a lot longer to read the book than to watch the movie. And I had only about 30 pages left to read. I decided to read it this morning, finally to finish it, because reading it at bedtime, my brain is just too tired for this particular book. It took a couple of hours, but finally, got it done! The... Sign in to see full entry.

Filling a vacuum
Today started with leftover Chinese food, and vacuuming. It's almost fun to use an really effective vacuum! Having put this off for a while, I had quite a lot of almost fun! Then I went to fill the wild bird feeder, and the sliding door went about 5 inches, and bounced off something. Well, I'd rearranged some things out on the deck the other day, so I shifted things around the living room until I could access the door to the deck. The bird feeder got refilled, things got rearranged again, a bit,... Sign in to see full entry.

Dreamtime
This morning's dream, before it gets away... There was a world I found myself in where there were three kinds of elf-like alien people, but they were all connected in a weird way. One was hostile, dangerous and dark; one was cheery and likeable, even a little sweet, but not very bright, actually rather infantile; one was the result of the other two, less exciting but the one who got things done--the only one you could talk with. The most dominant was the most powerful and sharp as steel, had... Sign in to see full entry.

On the cusp
Very late Friday... Very early Saturday, temps down around 11F tonight, though it seems to be rising slightly overnight, then all the way up to 50s during the day! That should see off the ice and snow on the streets, and there could be goings-out. I've begun to think about the Next Cat. The chosen cat, the rescue that will be an indoor cat, as distinct from the occasional visiting of the Communal Cats. There's the balance between the desire for the warmth of a kitty beside me, another... Sign in to see full entry.
Friday with Betty White
It's Friday, and it's balmy out--24F on the way to 36! Warm enough after a 2F night, that my cold water is running again, and so is the hot, which was frozen when I got up this morning. The sun is shining, and the snow... persists. I found a kinda fun show to watch. It's called Hot In Cleveland, a 2010-15 sit-com about three middle-aged women from Los Angeles who find themselves suddenly in Cleveland, Ohio. I was hoping to see some familiar scenery--I lived five years in Cleveland--but there... Sign in to see full entry.

Very Cold Wednesday
Well, I guess it's winter now for sure. There are at least 6 inches of snow making all the world I can see from my house, white. That goes right along with 6F when I woke up, -6 overnight. We expect a high today ~16F, and that will likely not be warm enough to thaw the cold water pipes that froze because I forgot to leave it dripping. Usually it's only the one to the upstairs bathroom, and that's the case today. Running the hot water in the same sink helps to thaw the cold pipe as they run side... Sign in to see full entry.

memories of China
Sunny, cold Tuesday morning looking ahead to colder and snowy evening! Before Wednesday is out, we're told to expect 3-6 inches on the doorstep. Also, the Year of the Tiger has arrived, if you celebrate the lunar year, particularly the Chinese lunar year new year. Or if you just celebrate tigers! It was three years ago on this day that our visas arrived, and Charlie and I were, in fact, in April, going to China. Those visas are good for another 7 years, but with the current political situation,... Sign in to see full entry.
