Wind is up and so is the temperature. We expect rain later today. But the great shelf of snow on this one branch of a fir tree behind the house has resisted avalanching for a week now, since it first landed there. I have watched it, anticipating, this whole week, and now that the snow bombs have fallen from branches all around it, this one remains. Of course it will go. Sooner or later, and probably when I am not looking. I can see it from here, looking out the window above the desk where I sit... Sign in to see full entry.

Post Christmas days
Every day I'm feeling closer to the end of this cold in my head. The cold outside is not going away yet, and we are getting a little more snow even now. Earlier, though, some colorful birds were flitting around in the apple tree where there are still quite a few apples hanging, and I caught a couple of them in my camera's eye. (updated link in my Adventuring travelblogue here) The elder granddaughter and I played one of her favorite board games: SORRY! The win went to her which is not a bad... Sign in to see full entry.

Wednesday goings out
Today I went out of the house for the first time in a week. The sun has been shining on the snow, the roads are clear, at least, in the county. You can see very exactly where the county line stops! We went out to Ivar's for lunch... It is not as I remember. For one thing, the halibut which has been my previous favorite, is three small squares for $17! Way too much, for that little bit of food! But the coleslaw was fresh and not overly sweet, so there's that. I am hungry again anyway, 3 hours... Sign in to see full entry.

Surfacing for a few words...
Here it is, getting on towards the middle of night, and after days and nights of bad coughing, much tiredness, and all that goes with a cold, I'm starting to think by tomorrow I will wake feeling pretty much on the mend. Here I am, vaxxed and boosted, tested, and flu-shotted, and I get out here and catch a common cold from my granddaughter who kicked it in three days! I've had it a week now, and can only hope it's pretty much gone a week from now when we are to fly home. So far, Charlie has not... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday, Snowday!
The snow has been falling fitfully all day, sometimes in real flurry, sometimes kinda lazy-like. Anyway, it's lovely to look at through any of the windows of the house, and I've taken a few pictures not yet ready for posting. This nasty cold that started a few days after I got here has moved down from sinuses to chest, and I am taking high-strength mucinex, hoping to keep it loose and not on the way to bronchitis or worse. I made soup tonight, starting with veg broth and adding random vegies,... Sign in to see full entry.

Christmas Eve 2021
Grey and damp in Seattle... could be snow tomorrow and almost certainly on Sunday! It is 3:33 and Charlie's flight should have touched down in Seattle now. We are happy his Southwest Airlines flights didn't get cancelled, as did the Delta and United flights--thousands, I hear--because crews got positive Covid tests, and can't fly as long as they are all under quarantine. That's a whole lot of holidays cancelled, a lot of Christmasses spoiled because people would not get the shots, or wear the... Sign in to see full entry.

Wednesday in the Pac NW
Here it is, evening fallen, rain no longer falling after a day of it coming down steadily. It is no surprise, really, what with one of the kids having a cold, that now I have a cold starting. I'm feeling off and on fevery, and listless, tending to fall asleep in front of the tv, or reading my book: the usual for the first day or two. Now the nose is beginning to drip, and there are occasional mighty sneezes. The grandkid seems to have kept it to only 2 or 3 days, so I am hoping that getting... Sign in to see full entry.

Wet Monday
This morning east of Seattle the precip was undecided, going from rain to snow to rain, then snow again, and finally has settled on Just Very Wet. After a breakfast at one of my favorite Seattle spots (they serve johnnycake with real maple syrup!) we drove down to Olympia to visit the Farmer's Market there. I went straight to Sea Blossom Seafoods and picked up some different kinds of cold-smoked salmon. It's my favorite flavor of the Northwest! We tried some of the silver salmon last night. I... Seattling in...
It is wet in the Seattle area, and chilly but not really cold outside. They say it will get up to 50F today before sliding back into 40s and maybe 30s. This is the first time I've been out here since Louisa, now 2, was born, and though we have been in touch quite a bit since then by video, this is the first time she has seen me in three dimensions! It took her a half hour, maybe, to be okay with that, and we are still a ways from cuddles. That's Louisa: She doesn't care to be touched by anyone... Sign in to see full entry.

Calm down, December!
The winds suddenly died down after 3pm, and all is very still now. No trees came down around here, a neighbor did lose some shingles off the roof, and my front screen door is totalled from banging hard against the door frame. Internet was gone for a while, and came back an hour or so ago. Without that or Netflix available, I got some more trip prep done, and read some more pages of Umberto Eco's THE NAME OF THE ROSE, which I've been hankerin' to read again since the movie doesn't seem to be...
