Time to get packing!

Flaming skies to start the day, and cold, cold out there, temps in the teens. Time and its funny ways... I realized suddenly that I fly out to Seattle next Tuesday to spend a week with the family there, and I've barely begun to think about what to shove in the little suitcase! WI'm flying on Southwest Airlines... Hoping that they have sorted out their holiday disasters which, it seems, had more to do with an obsolete computer system than the people who work the flights. Seems the CEO and COO,... Sign in to see full entry.

It's working!

Waking to snow again, just a few inches on the back porch rail. Temperatures today will range from high 20s to low 30s F, so that's not too bad. I have started taking a couple of new supplements for my diabetes. For a few weeks now I've added berberine to my daily doses. It works well for many people for lowering blood sugar numbers significantly, and can bring down the three-monthly average, the A1C blood test, down considerably. Side effects are minimal, generally, and the effective dosage is... Sign in to see full entry.

The Day After

The sky is growing pale as morning creeps in. The house is warming up after the chill of night. I've had a breakfast of eggs scrambled with the last crab cake, and am enjoying a cup of coffee. Good chance after that, I'll be going back to bed for a while. The kitchen and dining room, even the living room are pretty much recovered from yesterday's Christmas cheer. It was a good and satisfying day, though the menu we imagined in the days before did not quite entirely materialize. That's fine, we... Sign in to see full entry.

Tradition took a hit this Christmas

For all it was a quiet Christmas to begin with, it got quite busy. First, Charlie and I had his 'Monte Christmos' for breakfast. We gave each other presents, and then, when Charlie went back over to his side of the duplex to get something, his pup, Milo, had some sort of seizure. It only lasted a moment, and he was fine soon after, but we took him over to the emergency vet because--Well, you do when something like that happens. The emergency vet was too busy and sent us to another... and by the... Sign in to see full entry.

It's Breakfast, It's Breakfast, It's Finally Breakfast*...!

Like every good and hopeful kid, I went to bed early last night, and as is our custom, Charlie came over while I slept and finished up polishing and lighting our Christmas decoration. It's our Christmas magic, waking and coming out to see what he's done. I woke before dark, as usual, and very hungry, so took the chance he'd been and gone, and came out of my room to new lights and tinsels and things! I made some toast and eggs and after adding a few more gifty things to the scene, went back to... Sign in to see full entry.

Warming up for Christmas

It's 22F outside this morning, and the water runs freely again from yesterday's frozen taps! Predicted high of 47! So energized this morning! And I'd better be, as there are packages to drive to the UPS store, and things to wrap, and tomorrow's 'mixed grill' to thaw, and sitting places to clear of stuff...! And the last door to open on the advent calendar my Seattle daughter sent me, that is all different kinds of candy-covered licorice. Not to everyone's taste, but definitely to mine! But first... Happy Christmas Eve Eve...!

It was about a week ago I decided, yes, I want to decorate for the holidays this year. It was a near thing! But the key thing was to find something entirely new to do instead of hauling out the usual stuff and doing the usual decorations and all. And I am quite enjoying the progress we've made, though we are far from done. Charlie, of course, comes by to do the heavy lifting and stuff that requires getting down on the floor, or even just on the knees. I am so glad of him! It would not have... Winter comes calling

The most local weather station reports -10F at 7am, with windchill of -27. A couple of inches of snow have accumulated, and the wind has died down to ~8mph. By the front door, inside, there is a cute little drift of snow. I looked through the window downstairs, but can't see if anyone found shelter in our little critter haven last night. Inside, it's warm and bright, and will be unless the power goes out. Predicted high today is 4. I am not sure what yet, but something is going into the oven... Sign in to see full entry.

And here it comes...

The wind is kicking up outside, and there has been the occasional rumble of trash bins dancing down the street. The weather station says it's only 8mph but I don't believe them. And it is going to get stronger towards midnight as the temps drop and the windchill takes them to below-zeros. While I was in post-big-lunch stupor, Charlie walled in the area under my back porch with tarps on two sides, and made three of the kitty shelters and tucked them in there. There's some kibble also placed there... Sign in to see full entry.

Hunkering down...

Alexa tells me the temperature will get up to 50F today, -11 tonight, without considering wind-chill. And there will be wind. I hear the wind already. Today we will be making the community critter shelters. It took quite a lot more time and mileage to find a bale of straw for that purpose than I'd expected. We finally got one of the last two bales at a farm store about 20 miles south of here. After other errands it was too dark to make them, so they'll be put together later today. They will be...
