Charlie's birthday today

And here it is, all hot again. Friday, down from hot to warm, and Saturday, even cool! But enough whinging about the weather here. It's not nearly as bad here as much of the rest of the country, and the world. Charlie got another present. It was an impulse that hit me when I took his housemate, Rob, up to the computer store where I got my new old laptop last week. While he got his computer troubles sorted, I hung around, and happened to glance up... High on a shelf: drones! And not nearly as... Sign in to see full entry.

Memories and Reflections

I have a few memories of my very early childhood, all from the time we lived in Maryland in a town called Gaithersburg. I remember dancing about to Hot Diggity with my sister who was 2 years older than I was. I remember going to her kindergarten class one day to see ducklings swimming around in a bathtub. I remember the big round rosebush in front of the 1-up,1-down duplex we lived in--we had the down half--and the time she fell into it and indignantly told all the amused observers, " Don't... Memories...

A few years ago, I inherited my father's record collection, and the slightly archaic device on which to play them. In fact, I was thinking sadly only a couple of weeks back about how much of the music I grew up with--ethnic and folk--simply isn't played anymore, and felt such nostalgia, that I could only hear, distantly, the echoes remaining in memory. I remember crazy-dancing with my sister, when I was 3, maybe, to Hot Diggity! There was Catch a Falling Star, later on, and mygrandpa sang My... Sign in to see full entry.

Changes and developments

Having coffee now with a new-to-me laptop on my actual lap. It's a Dell, so not nearly as hot at an HP which would literally burn my lap without a pillow and sheet of cardboard between us. For that, and other reasons, I have finally replaced the old dear. It took all day yesterday to get it and to get it up and running with my basic pages. That always means finding old passwords or setting up new ones which even when carefully made are forgotten in mere moments. And being a refurbished machine,... Sign in to see full entry.

Start of the day: coffee and memories

I'm sitting here half-watching a British detective show while I slowly finish my still slightly warm coffee... When I was a kid, I sometimes went with my dad in to his work. He was an astronomer, working at the Hayden Planetarium in New York. One summer I quit a bad job--mother's helper for a bad mother...and he gave me a job at the Planetarium doing some paperwork, compiling reports on sun spots. Every day started with him and his colleagues having coffee and pastries along with casual... Sign in to see full entry.

Another Summer Thursday

This morning started early, and included a drive to Aurora, southeast of Denver, to deliver Charlie and his housemate Rob to a gaming convention. It's Rob's thing, an opportunity to show and demonstrate his games. He invents board games and invests in having them produced professionally. The hope is that he will sell a few, and also that he'll catch the eye of game publishers who attend such events. So on this occasion, Charlie is along as the helper. I was home again right after noon. I didn't... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday Afters

And here we are, home again. Charlie was successfully fetched from a bus station/park'n'ride lot I have never been to before but that turned out to be quite easy to find and access. The timing wasn't bad--I only waited half an hour before his ride from the mountains arrived, and I had been smart enough to bring a book along. There were a few rainshowers but nothing blinding or dramatic. No traffic jams on the way home, just the usual crazy selfish stupid drivers who pass on the right, who cut in... Sunday anticipations

Looks like a quiet Sunday coming on... The temperature overnight dropped down to 51 and this morning I actually dug out a sweater to go over the T-shirt I slept in. Leftover egg foo yung this morning... I like how this one place cooks it, but they really don't understand the concept of adding vegetables and/or meat to it. I added my own to this last night--stir-fried sugar snap peas, onion, and mushrooms. The gravy is tasty. But I need to find another place that makes it better--and delivers!... Road Tripping!

Ten hours of roads high-speed and paved, and low, low speed washboard un-paved, with miles of moderate-speed 2-lane paved through the amazing Poudre Canyon... If you have a map, look north of Fort Collins, and follow Hwy 14 into the Rockies. Oh, and a practically no-speed paved section, 2-3 miles of I 25 that took an hour to get through. Total miles: 250. How do the organizers of events like this LARP Charlie is attending this weekend, find these sites? Originally, he had planned to bus to... Sign in to see full entry.
