Meetings of minds and hearts

I had a good day at work today. We have a meeting every Monday morning which is part catch-up, part discussion on the key issues of the week and a lot of ego massage and one upmanship. I have a low boredom threshold and do not engage in ego massage. I therefore rather see these meetings as a waste... Sign in to see full entry.

Goodbye

We settled Ivan on the train this evening for his journey back to school. He is quite used to returning on his own and actually enjoys the logistical challenge of traversing London via train, tube or bus. He has just 'phoned to say he's safely there. I know he prefers company and am overwhelmed by... Sign in to see full entry.

Does anyone like Franz Ferdinand?

My eldest son Ivan does. He's on a train home from London at the moment and probably has them blasting out in his ears. We got the first album and may get the second for him for Christmas. The reviews are suggesting it's every bit as good as their debut. I love 'the dark of the matinee.' It's... Sign in to see full entry.

Dancing Queen

This was always one of my favourite Abba records and I remember dancing to it through the summer of 1976. Abba were part of my much-remembered teenage years - a musical diary whose entries I still re-read often. In short, it was such a happy time and this particular record just has an exhilarating... They're not characters, they're real

I'm sure that many of youlike me, like to observe from afar and then record vital details, be it of places or events or people. Commuting every day I come across a large cross-section form children to students to very important office workers to retired people enjoying a day out. My journey takes me... I came home

from a conference today (I've mentioned it in my Letters blog), worrying that I am becoming completely out of touch at work. Why can't I hold on to the 'don't worry/it's not worth it' position? I was feeling really aggressive and just came in and flew on to the PC. I typed out a raging torrent of... Sign in to see full entry.

The moon

was moving behind a web of loose cloud this evening as I drove back along the riverbank, like someone was shining a torch below a pan of dried fat. Then, suddenly, it was clear of the disguise and the fields were bathed in pure white light. Someone at work said that their mood swings when they were... Sign in to see full entry.

Miscarriages and the missing

As I said last week, the Telegraph have a major promotional push for their newspapers at the moment. Today's giveaway was a Style magazine from their Sunday Telegraph title. The aim was to show fresh new chic ideas and pen portraits of the rich and famous and spoilt. I cannot be in the target market... Sign in to see full entry.

Following my thoughts on the Armistice

Firstly thanks to all of you for your comments on my piece on the Armistice and the poem. I really appreciated them and it helped me through a reflective time. I was in our local village this morning to buy a paper, when a policeman blocked off the street ahead of me. Shortly afterwards, a parade... Sign in to see full entry.

We played games

My wife and I actually had some quality time together yesterday evening, on our own! The children had early nights as both were tired yesterday morning and have had a few later-than-usual bedtimes this week. Susan and I played on a 70's game console I bought her for a Christmas present last year.... Sign in to see full entry.
