Counting my blessings

It's difficult, isn't it, when you know that someone at work is conspiring against you or the people you work with? Do you challenge them on it, without really having enough evidence, or do you smile nicely and keep quiet for fear of making things worse? I have a strong intuition and tend to... Teeth and glasses

There was a family, sitting in the seats in front of me on the train home this evening: two youngish boys and a mum and dad. They were laughing at each others' jokes but they weren't loud or intrusive. They seemed very content - relaxed in each others' company. I did a double-take and realised that... Why worry

I spent quite a lot of yesterday playing games with my family, watching football and trying to work out how we might pay for our second son, Christian's, education if he goes to the school we looked at on Friday. We worked out that I would need to work at least 13 more years, all other things being... Sign in to see full entry.

Television doesn't solve loneliness

I was reading a quote by T.S. Eliot which said that 'television is a medium of entertainment which permits millions of people to listen to the same joke at the same time, and yet remain lonesome.' I also read, in a completely separate place that television, unlike books or radio, requires no brain... Sign in to see full entry.

She's more barking than I am

Sitting on the train today, some ten minutes before it was due to leave, a lady came along the aisle and asked if she could sit in the empty seat beside me. She was very tall and willowy, with untidy, grey hair and a distant look in her very large eyes. I replied that she could, providing she'd... Sign in to see full entry.

Everything’s gone dark

I went into the office toilet this morning and everything went dark. At first I wondered if it was a sign but quickly realised that it was a power cut. I remember these so well from my childhood when the early ‘70’s were constantly interrupted by power cuts. Candles in the understairs cupboard; Ted... Sign in to see full entry.

Feeling guilty again

I'm sure many of you will know the guilt and pressure of trying to complete things quickly so that you can have some quality time with the children? I fight this demon during most evenings. The starting point is me being tired and them delighted to see me. The denouement is me 'quickly' updating a... Sign in to see full entry.

I'm lucky to be here

There was a really interesting letter in one of the papers here recently that talked about those of us born in the 1940's, 50's, 60's or even 70's are very lucky to have survived - such was the lack of regulation in our very un-pc lives. Mothers smoke and/or drank and ate blue cheese dressing... Sign in to see full entry.

Thomas has arrived

We have a new kitten - a ginger tom called, well Thomas. We already have three cats but Susan and the children were visiting a Garden Centre on Monday. The owner was trying to serve her but his counter and till were besieged by kittens. One of them (Thomas) ran along to Christian and purred, never... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunny days

I had a meeting in the City this morning and then walked down Holborn to a lunchtime meeting. The sun shone and people smiled. I got home this evening to a new kitten (we now have four cats) which is a birthday present for our son, Christian. 'It's name is Thomas', I was told by excited pairs of...
