For a while, we feared bugs in the siding.
But the bird that comes hammering on that one corner of the house every morning is not, after all, a woodpecker. It is a Northern Flicker, hammering on something resonant to announce her interest and availability to potential mates. These birds typically find anything to hammer on that will produce a loud, carrying sound. They favor metal stovepipes. We're fortunate not to have one of those.
