DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS, pt 1

Walnut season is over. The leaves are gone, the tree is an etching against the brightening dawn. The Brick Street troop scavenges tasty morsels hiding like Easter eggs in clumps of unmown grass on the south side of the garage. The human on the north side harvested all the hulls that fell there.... Sign in to see full entry.

TRYING TO BANISH THE GRINCHY IMPULSES

One problem - and it's a big one - about trying to buy gifts for distant grandkids is that you have no clue as to what their interests are. So if I yield to popular culture and send Barbie gear to a granddaughter, I risk disappointing her because she's so over that fad and has taken a dislike to... Sign in to see full entry.

Remembrance

I watched the services honoring Rosalynn Carter yesterday on MSNBC. The network had the grace to let it play without commercial interruptions or promos, without a voice over. At one point a granddaughter read a brief love letter from young Jimmy to his beloved wife. It was so sweet, simply... Sign in to see full entry.

THE BOY COULD DANCE...

We first made friends with the Leydig family the summer before my senior year when we all worked the strawberry harvest for a grower in the valley. Harlan was probably the fastest picker among us, and we were highly motivated to work fast. At a nickel a quart, we could make well over a dollar an... Sign in to see full entry.

I'm thinking it's still wise to be cautious especially if the other party is someone you don't know well. Kids especially... Sign in to see full entry.

NAME DROP

This just in: story on the 6: a.m. news about Apple's new feature for cell phones, called Name Drop. You meet someone, you set your phone next to theirs, and Name Drop picks up your contact info. There was a warning. Folks tell your kids not to lay their phone down next to that of anybody they don't... Sign in to see full entry.

THE GRIO AWARDS

Until a couple days ago I had never heard of the Grio Awards. I was watching some forgettable program and counting stitches on a scarf I was crocheting when I grabbed the remote to get away from "news." There was a listing on CBS: the Grio Awards. Nosy me, I had to find out what the heck that was.... Sign in to see full entry.

REMEMBER WHEN...

With Black Friday sales on every TV channel, on FB pages and all the social media, it's hard to miss the steals and deals being offered. Amazon has lots of them. There was a conversation across the table on Thursday about sending holiday gifts to the distant grandkids. You just have Amazon ship the... Sign in to see full entry.

Red Onions...

You can't chop 'em without a few tears. But oh, the flavor they add to a burger or tomato sauce with green peppers. Worth it. Got the veggie/server ready for later - carrot sticks, sliced green & red peppers, Cherub tomatoes. Toasted some Italian bread I brought home from the restaurant yesterday... THIS JUST IN

As I'm tying my shoes and my mind is a blank this suddenly occurs to me: PHILOSOPHY is what we think about life. POETRY is how we feel about it. Each has elements of the other. Sign in to see full entry.
