We had a nice rain a few days ago - a soaker that turned the drying brown grass back to lush green and helped my new sod turn the corner and decide to take root. There's been so much really heavy, apocalyptic rain on the news - washouts and sinkholes and cars caught in flooded streets, flung into... Sign in to see full entry.

Somethin' Like Solidarity...
I was having a low-energy day at The Center yesterday. Our former volunteer Hope, 96 years old and stubborn - refused to use her walker. So she took a fall, as we do when we age, especially when the side effects of routine meds tend to make us a bit dizzy and off-balance. She got through the rehab a... Sign in to see full entry.

There's big trouble in St. Louis
St. Louis TV channels broadcast live the Mon. night NAACP meeting at a church in one of St. Louis' neighborhoods. There'd been a riot and looting the night before after a peaceful memorial vigil for an 18-year-old drew many people and turned violent. The boy was shot and killed by a police officer.... The "News" ain't what it used to be.
Trained professionals doing the reporting, the writing, sitting behind the anchor desk. They were once trusted with the facts and respectable, putting the story front and center. The who, what, where, when and possibly why were given in objective detail. They were like us - outsiders, observers.... Sign in to see full entry.

Mad Men: the series
Thanks to early wakefulness, I discovered they're re-running "Mad Men" during the pre-dawn hours on Sundays. Since I didn't start watching the series early on, I never got some of the angles of the story, which didn't stop it from being interesting. To those who may have missed it, the setting is in... Medical Experiments... (homegrown variety)
After years of increasing misery, being trapped in my own bathroom and unable to leave the house - even to do yard work - until my morning bout with "gastric distress" was finished, I heard someone on a morning talk show describe her own symptoms and issues. It turns out, she says, it was Celiac... Sign in to see full entry.

Sonny Day...
A couple months ago son Joe and I went to breakfast at Cracker Barrel, arriving half an hour ahead of the Sunday a.m. rush. He'd invited Guy and his not-wife, but they had some other plans. We looked at photos of little Kaitlin, Joe Junior's two-year-old on his smart phone, talked about how cute she... Sign in to see full entry.

This n that
Tuesday at The Center, Bea arrived with a fresh new haircut. She's one of those women who still has plenty of hair, and it's still dark brown, barely sprinkled with gray. She has some kind of retina problem though, and has to get shots in her eye from time to time, which makes me squirm just to... Sign in to see full entry.

It's garbage day... and recycling
So I'm getting out in a minute and hauling those giant tubs to the curb. There's an amazing collection of junk in the garbage can, including a rusted horseshoe dug up by the fence builders. I think Clarence kept the long square hand-forged nail as a little momento. I probably should have nailed the... Sign in to see full entry.

De fence, she is no longer an offence to my tranquility.
Jim came by yesterday with Clarence and The Kid, set the gate posts, hung the gates, cleared away the rest of their debris. Later, Got a brief call from John at the hall to see if the fence job was done I told him the crew was finally through with that rollicking "barrel of fun." Its doggerel... Sign in to see full entry.
