I've been kind of on the outside looking in for as long as I can remember. Mom was divorced, raising 3 of us on her own at a time when divorce was a disgrace. We made it by the skin of our teeth, financially speaking, making do or doing without. Mom made education a priority for us - that's what... Sign in to see full entry.

Sad news from my Pacific NW family
Turns out the "over-reaction" wasn't - my older brother's going home from the hospital tomorrow where he's been treated for Stage 4 cancer (of the prostate, I believe). He's going home to hospice care, where his life expectancy is measured in days rather than months - which was what we'd believed... Sign in to see full entry.

The Bone People
Reading this book in fits and starts, few pages at a time, titled “The Bone People.” Its author is Keri Hulme, a New Zealand woman of Maori extraction. It was originally written in that language – this is a translation. It’s full of native phrases and expressions. It definitely comes from an... Sign in to see full entry.

Threads
To my mind, there’s a parallel between crocheting a thread into a scarf or hat, and taking an idea from the “what if?” to a story plot. Threads. Making something out of “nothing.” So many seemingly unrelated things turn out to be connected. On Saturday at the Goshen Farmer’s Market I was delighted... Sign in to see full entry.

Coincidence?
Early Saturday morning I talked to my son Joe (the plumber/HVAC guy) about this ‘n that, including the issues of dealing with unusually needy people. He had an ex-girlfriend, they’d been broken up for several months over her passive- aggressive ways and her constant need of attention. She had... Sign in to see full entry.

It's early yet...
The weather is calm. No blaring storm warnings on TV, it's fresh and green outside. I did open the door to let in a breath of morning air - my usual sampling of what today will be. Cool. Birds somewhere sending messages to one another. I haven't read any outrageous stuff on MSN online news, no robo... Sign in to see full entry.

Friendly Skies???
In the news today, a blip about a former soap actress who got into a kerfuffle with a flight attendant and was kicked off the plane. It seems her “crime” was that she didn’t wash her hands after using the toilet. A tempest in a teapot? Mountain out of a molehill? You decide. The plane had sat on the... Sign in to see full entry.

Oops! I really did see a glamorous star!
But Ann Sothern wasn't in "My Friend Irma" - that was Marie Wilson, also a gorgeous, leggy blonde. Now I am uncertain whether the lady I saw that day was Ms. Sothern or the beautiful Marie Wilson - both were major stars in the early 1950s. If you Google these names, you can get a Wikipedia story and... Sign in to see full entry.
My Friend Irma
Friendship, friendship, it’s just the perfect blendship When other friendships have been forgot Ours will still be hot, wah-dah wallah wallah dis boom bah… To the best of my recollection, and without benefit of accompaniment, those are the words to the theme song for a very early TV show, perhaps... Booths for Ladies
There was a bar in town, an uninspired village that had mushroomed in the wake of a big logging and mill operation that harvested the old growth timber from the nearby foothills. The mill established a cookshack at the junction of a logging road and a state highway, and a bunkhouse for the single... Sign in to see full entry.
