DAYS OF OUR BACKYARD SQUIRRELS

White Ears, the wise old female guardian and leader of the Brick Street Troop, has of late been acting very strange. Her advice has changed. She stopped offering how-to instructions on being aware of your surroundings and don't wait to leap away if there's the least little hint that TomCat could be... Sign in to see full entry.

ON THE JOB

I was 15, spending the last half of the summer with my Aunt Ella in Kennewick, as mom decided she needed a vacation from the three of us kids. Rose was 12, Jim was 10, and they elected to spend the last few weeks of summer on the farm with Aunt Ethel and Uncle Sam. Ever since we first bugged out to... Sign in to see full entry.

ADULT TOPICS

While playing computer solitaire and letting my mind work on a story idea, I came across a reminder about my young wife illusions: I’d been very naïve about what married life would be like. In those days - the early 1950s - all the women's magazines featured articles about how to please your man and... Sign in to see full entry.

HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

Sandy Morris was a seventh grader in Miss Olsen's home room at the Chilton school. Kids came from miles around to Chilton - a consolidated district that served half of Lewis County. Most of the fathers were mill hands, farmers or logging truck drivers, and the mothers stayed home to keep house,... Sign in to see full entry.

VETERAN'S DAY MISCELLANY

(to the best of my recollection) Our house in Kennewick was originally on a farm up in the Horse Heaven Hills. Mother bought it at auction after the Japanese owners were taken to an internment camp in '41 or '42. She had it moved and placed on a foundation on her lot next to the Lee Staker,... no. just no.

watching Kyle Rittenhouse's performance on the stand yesterday, whoofing and puffing and protesting it wasn't his fault - he was in fear for his life and everybody was picking on him, trying to hit him with a skateboard to get his assault rifle away and he was just trying to protect property at a... StoryWorth -- or is it?

For my birthday a couple months back, my daughter gifted me with a one-year's subscription to an online 'write your own' story thing called StoryWorth. They email a topic idea every Monday, some memory jogger designed to get you started on a story from your childhood, etc. You write the story and... Sign in to see full entry.

UPDATE ON THE MUD DAUBER THING:

The mud dauber nest was actually built in the vent tube alongside the gas tank. It's designed to vent air out of the tank when you pump in gas. The nest was blocking the vent, which stopped the gas pump from working. He said this was a new one on him, he'd never seen this happen. In addition to the... Sign in to see full entry.

CAR TO THE SHOP: A MONDAY SURPRISE

I drive a 2004 Toyota Corolla that I bought from an Enterprise Car Rental lot in a nearby town shortly after I moved back to this neck of the woods from Seattle in 2004. The car had about 16,500 miles on it at the time. Seventeen years later after having the oil changed twice a year, winterizing and... Sign in to see full entry.

UPDATE ON THE STALKER ISSUE

Yesterday my sons stopped by for coffee. It was a gorgeous Sunday, temps going up into the 60s, sunny - almost unheard of in November, and a welcome reprieve from the previous few days of frost and low temps in the "cold enough to snow" range. Grandson Matt, who recently finished his tour of duty... Sign in to see full entry.
