"Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs"

I saw the sign advertising this class today while breezing along in the Dragon on my way home. It was posted in front of a local dog training center, the kind that has what looks like a moat, jumping fences, and all kinds of interesting doggie things. My mind wandered to: 'what kind of training... Sign in to see full entry.

... they were bouncing off the walls wanting to see the Dragon!

I rode the Dragon to my classes today and these 2 little third grade boys in particular were just bouncing off the walls, waiting to see the bike at the end of class. One even crawled under the tables to try to grab my motorcycle helmet when I was out of the room for a minute! After class, I... Sign in to see full entry.

New kids...

My 'younger kids' class totally changed today. Unexpectedly, I had some new arrivals and departures. The material I had prepared was geared more towards yesterday's class, so I had to improvise a little. The new kids seemed very nervous! I was kind and welcoming to them and I remember what it was... Ah..... students-light!

My classes are very light this week because school is starting and there is a lot of shifting around going on with schedules. Today I did more 'idiom' work with the kids, things like 'a watched pot never boils,' and, 'a one-horse town.' They just love these because I think they hear these very... Sign in to see full entry.

I should be a stunt woman!

Well, I made contact with the ground again today- that makes twice in about three days. I should be a professional stunt woman... I am getting so good at falling down! (This puts new meaning on 'going to ground.') The other day, I was attempting to sit in a light plastic chair that I had just draped... Sign in to see full entry.

Fun classes today- and this was 'loud guy's last day!!!

My classes went beautifully today (beautifully is an adverb) - we did a lot of adverb stuff... and those smarties just breezed through it. Today was 'loud guy's' last day- YAY! Today he got down and applied himself in class; I think he wanted to end his career there on a good note. One of the... Sign in to see full entry.

How do you teach 'original thinking' ?

This weekend I've been evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of my little Chinese American students. I've realized that one of the most common comments I hear is (often made in a wailing, anguished voice) "What should I write?" These students just love the 'fill in the blank' stuff; they want the... Got any 'word of the day' suggestions?

This morning I heard an interesting new word on NPR radio- it was 'postalgia ' meaning a kind of nostalgia for a future that you envisioned in your past... but things that never happened-- like flying cars or some of the Captain Nemo stuff. The inventor of the word has submitted it to be included in... Sign in to see full entry.

These little angels got to learn about semicolons today... (Photo too!)

...and I was the one who got to introduce them to this very special grammatical tool!!! Virgin semi colon people!! I drew a picture of a semi colon on the board and asked them if they knew what it was. "No......" No one did. "Listen up!" I said and launched right into a talk about what semicolons... Up at 4:30am for the last day of this #$%^*% week!

One more day- whew! This week, those little second-graders have chewed through three times the material I had originally prepared for them, so I have constantly been having to come up with new stuff. They're like hyperactive little brain sponges! Today is the last day of their workshop so I got up... Sign in to see full entry.
